AM625: eMMC clock frequency changing during startup

Part Number: AM625

Customer made different product based on SDK8.3 and SDK9.2.1.9. captured eMMC clock changing process as below.

1: SDK8.3: (usual boot):  400K---25M--3.125M-400K---25M--200M---400K---25M---200M--400K--25M--200M

#2. SDK8.3: (Falcon Boot): 400K---25M-------------400K---25M--200M---400K------------200M

#3. SDK9.2: (Falcon Boot):  400K---25M-------------400K---25M--50M-----400K---50M---200M

We want to map the eMMC clock frquency changes to different bootup stages.

#1. What is the eMMC clock frequency during eMMC ROM bootloader stage? 400KHz and 25MHz of the first stage?

#2. Is the clock frequency initialized from low to high according to dts parameter? seems it is right in SDK9.2 (UBOOT 2023), but with SDK8.3 UBOOT 2021, there isn't 50MHz stage.

 #3. With the default SDK9.2, 50MHz stage is DDR52 mode, which is not supported in later spec, but it doesn't cause only problem so far, is there risk to remain it as many product deployed to field already.

[UPDATED]

I add log print in uboot and Kernel sdhci_set_ios() as below:

UBoot patch:

https://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/print_5F00_emmc_5F00_status_5F00_sdk9.2.1.9.uboot.patch

Kernel patch:

Got log:
sdk9.2.1.9-emmc-status-debug.log

there is 2 stage working at 52MHz

    Questions signal voltage=4 means 3.3V, should be wrong

    Why init to HS200 twice in UBOOT,

    There is cmd0 btween

    Why init to 52MHz after starting kernel in SDK9.2, it still in UBOOT. There is not cmd0 to initiate

    Although the 52MHz DDR mode stage can be changed to SDR mode, but this stage should be removed according to SDK12.01, it is not necessary as it is still in UBOOT, it is repeated initialization.

  • Hello,

    There is too much context in the query with multiple patches, logs. I observe discrepancies as well. Could you please state the first query you would like to have clarified?

    Please note any logs with [SDHCI] and [SDHCI-KERNEL] must be from U-Boot and Kernel respectively at least according to the debug prints in the attached patches. Also, the TI specific queries here are the eMMC initialization by ROM and the DDR52 mode support on AM62x. Anything else is generic U-Boot or Linux MMC subsystem implementation.

  • Hello,

    If I don't provide patch and log, just said the eMMC initialization procedure is wrong, I will be asked for evidence.

    I have summarized observation and questions in upper table. if you need evidence, can look into log.

  • These starting kernel logs in SDK v9.2 has SDHCI string which is not present in any of the attached kernel patches.

    Why do you think these SDHCI logs are from Kernel?

  • I didn't say it from Kernel, I say it output after Starting kernel...It should still from UBOOT as it has SDHCI string, I don't know why it output here and configure to 52MHz from HS200. then UBOOT stage configured eMMC clock 3 times: 400K-25MHz-HS200, 400K-25MHz-HS200, 26MHz-52MHz.  And there is not CMD0 between them, so it is not triggered by resetting eMMC and reconfiguration.

    That is one of the question I need clarification. SDk12.1 hasn't the 3rd one.

  • then UBOOT stage configured eMMC clock 3 times: 400K-25MHz-HS200, 400K-25MHz-HS200, 26MHz-52MHz.  And there is not CMD0 between them, so it is not triggered by resetting eMMC and reconfiguration.

    The first two are just the result of the U-Boot commands run on autoboot to boot the Linux from MMC

    => printenv bootcmd
    bootcmd=run envboot; run distro_bootcmd;
    => printenv envboot
    envboot=mmc dev ${mmcdev}; if mmc rescan; then echo SD/MMC found on device ${mmcdev}; if run loadbootscript; then run bootscript; else if run loadbootenv; then echo Loaded env from ${bootenvfile}; run importbootenv; fi; if test -n $uenvcmd; then echo Running uenvcmd ...; run uenvcmd; fi; fi; fi;

    The "mmc dev" and "mmc rescan" will cause the MMC initialization.

    As for the third, not sure exactly. Will have to check.

    And I do see CMD0 command, in the shared logs, each time the eMMC initialization happens.

  • As for the third, not sure exactly. Will have to check.

    These are the MMC driver deinitialization logs during device cleanup. These are not present in SDK v12.x because of the following commit (upstream) in 12.x

    https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-u-boot/ti-u-boot/commit/?id=d99f8d2d749c0e1b352766281f5f5d71fa845f76

  • With this patch to SDK9.2.1.9 UBOOT, removed the third one.
