Which DSP to use?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320DM368, TMS320F28334

Hi to everybody!

I haven't used TI DSPs before, but I want to implement one of them for my master project. I have bought most of the parts for my future autonomous robot-vehicle. The vehicle is going to have three features. First is wall following, second is obstacle avoiding, and the third one is real time pattern recognition (following signs for turning right/left, stop sign, speed increase/decrease sign etc). I know that there are many kind of these robots but I want to build one on my own.

So my questions are:

1. What kind of DSP to use for this application. Can one DSP manage to do all of the work? There are going to be two DC motors geared with the two tire wheels, five range sensors and one camera. I would very much appreciate if someone can recommend one DSP which can do the job, if any alone can.

2. I am coming soon to San Francisco for a couple of days. I am not familiar with the ways of buying TI products in the USA. Are there going to be shops where I can buy some of their products, or do I have to order them.

Sorry if my English isn't so good.

Best regards!

  • Vojislav,

Welcome to the TI E2E Forums and to the USA for your visit.

    1. When I think of motor control, I think of the C2000 family of TI Microcontrollers. But there are also Stellaris M3 MCUs that can provide motor control, plus a variety of other TI processors. My recommendation is to go to TI.com and look at some of the links under Applications, especially Industrial. You will find some example applications and block diagrams for sensors of various types and different Motor Control examples. Also under Applications is the Video & Imaging category for you to check for the types of video processing you want to do.

We do have high-end processors that could do everything, but you may be better off going with multiple processors. You can get low-cost development boards that have motor control signal drivers and other development boards that have camera interfaces.

    2. Once you have found some choices that you want to buy, go to the Product Folder for that device, such as TMS320F28334 or TMS320DM368, click on Buy and you will see a list of distributors. You can contact one or more of them to find what their sales process is.

    Best of luck to you!

    Regards,
    RandyP
