AM335x Quad SPI Boot Mode

Dear TI,

I have been researching using Quad SPI flash on my design with AM335x but would like have the option to boot from it.  From what I am reading in the technical reference manual: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruh73d/spruh73d.pdf and on this forum post: http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/sitara_arm174_microprocessors/f/791/t/168471.aspx it appears that there are working examples for UBoot as well as Starterware for a SPI Nor Flash off of SPI0.

It looks like in order to use the Quad SPI Flash I would need to connect it not to SPI0 but to the MMC controller pins.  Has anyone demonstrated using the raw boot mode of the MMC/SD perhiperal to boot off a Quad SPI Flash?  Or perhaps there is a better way to utilize a quad SPI flash?

Sincerely,

Jason

  • The AM335x series of devices do not have native support for Quad SPI flash.

However, after reviewing a datasheet of a Quad SPI flash device, it appears these devices are backward compatible to a single data line mode of operation.  While the AM335x does not have support for the dual-spi, implying 2 bidirectional data lines, or quad-spi, implying 4 bidirectional data lines, the default mode is single data line mode.
