How to start with OMAP4 2D/3D graphics accelerator

Hi, is just that i have a pandaboard with omap4430 with android ics running and i would like to use the 2D/3D graphics accelerator and i don't know where to start with, if some one could help on this it would be really great, i have already used the linux kernel and developed on it, so if i have to start by the drivers there wouldn't be any trouble, is just that i don't know very well the driver for graphics acceleration. I would recommend an Android Activity using GLSurfaceView as a good starting point. The web should have plenty of existing examples. If you are using the NDK, you can use standard OpenGLES.

Thank you very much for the help. I wanted to know how to enable the 2D/3D graphics hardware acceleration for pandaboard (with omap4430, android 4.0.4 and 3.0.8 kernel), or is it just handled from OpenGLES?

If you are running ICS its should be enabled. You don't have to do anything, its enabled by default..

Exactly which feature you want to use and how you use them I would need more detailed information. What exactly are you trying to do?

Hi, thank you very much for the help, what i need exactly is to speed up the amount of frames per second in 3D graphics, and i thougth that using the 2D/3D hardware accelerator would be faster, what i'm using is OpenGL ES 2.0. i changed the values of the egl.cfg file to 1 1 android (it was in 0 0 android) but it didn't changed anything regarding to the performance. Thanks in advanced.

Hi Magdalena, well, i haven't solve my question regarding to the hardware graphics accelerator, how does it improve the performance of the graphics regarding to the frames or how do i know that it is working, i still don't know this exactly.

So it seems to me that you want a way to run some test without graphics accelration and with so you can compare the difference. Is this what you want? With Android 4.0 (ICS) there isn't a way to do that, you would need a custom linux/ubuntu set up for that.

If you can boot to the android screen with ICS, your graphics accelration is enabled and working. You can verify driver initialization with the kernel message logs. If you want to post them, I can show you which logs identify this. If you run any OpenGL based application in ICS and you see graphics, your SGX acceleration is running. You can also run things like PVRTrace from Imagination Technologies (http://www.imaginationtechnologies.com/powervr/insider/powervr-utilities.asp) and it will give you some idea of how hard the SGX chip is working for your application.
