AM335x with TPS65217B - how can I provide backup battery?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3354

Dear support,

I'm working on a new project with AM3354 (ZCZ package) and with TPS65217B as power supply regulator. My application will be powered by AC line. I would use AM335x internal RTC but how can I implement the backup battery in case of AC power line loss?

My best is to use a small coin lithium battery (example: ML614 - http://www.digikey.it/product-detail/it/ML614-TZ21/SY152-ND/1929229) but I don't know if TPS65217B is able to manage a small battery like this. I need only about half an hour of backup time and I don't have enough space to use bigger battery.

Is there an example of this implementation, if is it possible?

Thanks very much,

Daniele.

  • Hey Daniele,

TI answered this question for me previously in the PMU forum:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/pmu/f/200/p/166378/606557.aspx#606557

Basically you connect your Backup Battery to the TPS BAT inputs.

  • Ali,

I had already read that forum but TPS datasheet specify that it is able to manage Li Ion or Li Polymer battery. ML614 battery seems to be only Lithium (as specified in datasheet). Is it the same thing? I'm not an expert in batteries.

Another question. When the AC input falls down, all power supplies except LDO1 will be switched off automatically or CPU has to do this operation? Because the capacity of ML614 battery is very low and if all system remain powered it will be discharged instantly.

    Thanks very much,

    Daniele.
