C6678 EVB RSV pins

http://www.advantech.com/Support/TI-EVM/6678le_download3.aspx

On the C6678 EVB p15, the RSV03 is routed to an unmounted pad then to ground. This is correct as the datasheet says that it should be not connected. However, what is the reason behind this move? Isn't it more space-saving by leaving the pin unconnected? Or could it be future dice may need this pin to be grounded?

I asked this because I would like to save space on the PCB and just leave the RSV03 unconnected.

  • The EVM is designed and built before we receive the first samples of the silicon.  Like all engineers we are paranoid so we wanted access to that reserve pin in case the designers forgot to tell us something.  Fortunately the silicon worked as expected and that reserve pin can be left unconnected.
