Spidev and Ethernet Throughput AM33xx

AM33xx - Beaglebone

I have recently come accross two bugs in the 3.2 PSP Kernel release. One is that you cannot transfer more than 158bytes over SPI using the userland spidev driver and another where high network loads cause the Kernel to hang - easily reproducable in both cases.

Where is the correct place to report these and is there somewhere that I can track kernel changes to see if these fixes have already be addressed in the development kernel.

Hi Jack,

In general, you can post a report of the issue (with steps to reproduce) on these forums and someone from TI will open a bug tracking ticket for you. You will be given a URL using which you can track the status of the bug report.

On the network issue, are you sure kernel "hangs" under network load? If kernel is hung or crashed, it will not recover after the load is removed. Note that under network load, it is common for console to become unresponsive. However, once the load is removed, the console should come back again.

Thank you for your reply. Under further investigation it seems that there is a hardware fault which was causing issues with the beaglebone and causing it to drop packets under high load over ethernet.

However, the SPI issue exists in both of my beaglebones. There are two code snippets below which is the butchered spidev_test.c file. One shows spdiev working with 100 bytes of data, and the other shows the spidev function blocking with 200 bytes of data.

Cross compile these and run them on the beaglebone or (probably) any other similar piece of hardware.
