DM3730 USB host problem

Hi,

We have designed a board with DM3730,we use USB3320 chip as host phy on USB port1 connected with ULPI interface. The linux kernel version is "linux-2.6.37-psp04.02.00.07.sdk". When I connected a usb massage storage device to the USB phy,some error message appear to the console as following.

[ 152.807464] ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: port 1 cannot be enabled

[ 152.813354] ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: Maybe your device is not a high speed device?

[ 152.821105] ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: USB host (EHCI) controller does not support full speed or low speed device on it's root port.

[ 152.833221] ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: Please connect full/low speed device via a high speed hub.

[ 152.842163] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1

I got some information that the EHCI USB controller only supports high speed USB packets while the OHCI controller only supports low/full speed USB packets,a high speed hub must be connected to the ULPI PHY if the system needs to support low/full speed USB peripherals when use EHCI USB controller. But,when I connect a usb hub between the usb massage storage and usb phy,the problem isn't solved still.

Can you give me some suggestion?

may be you share the scheme? I have designed a custom board with DM3730 and USB3320. It works fine, but I don't use kernel from TI.

Hi Maxim Podbereznyy,

Our scheme refer to the MISTRAL EVM MAIN BOARD REG G,the difference is that we use USB port1 while MISTRAL use USB port2,we have made some initialization change of linux kernel,may be my usb hub isn't high speed?

"usb hub isn't high speed" - it must be 10 years old not to be a HS device

The first downstream hub must support high speed if you plan to attach low speed or full speed USB devices to any of the DM37xx EHCI ports connected to a high speed ULPI PHY.

You should read Advisory 2.1 in the DM37xx Silicon Errata and make sure you are using the optimized PLL configuration to minimize long term frequency drift.

We have a DM3730 based custom board, on which 3G module connected to HOST USB 2.

We are observing USB disconnections after few minutes of operation, hardly 2-3 minutes.

We are using kernel from TI. and error message when usb host disconnected looks like this.

[ 93.695251] hub 1-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...
[ 93.702178] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 2

When connected device on USB OTG port of DM3730 also we see disconnections but it is connecting again.

Where as on HOST port it is not.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Sorry, My problem is still not solved, now the USB host function is not necessary for me, so I don't follow up the this problem,

Still i am facing issue. i put USB in Test mode and analyzed usb by USB analyzer.

I see lot of CRC16 errors. Ti is not recommending SMSC3319 PHY with DM3730, i doubting PHY for this failure.

We used a flex cable for USB lines DM, DP, So i am suspecting that also.

Hi:

I worked with Sriharibabu. The latest observation is:

Once the disconnection happened, DM3730 USB HOST is dead. If I remove USB device from it and re-plug in the device, USB HOST could not detect it.

If I unplug and plug in the USB device before the disconnection happen, USB HOST could detect the plug event and connect to the device. I had run the eye diagram check on usb D+/D-, and signal looks clean.

Somehow the USB HOST controller failed into such a mode that it could not recover by itself.

What could cause this behavior?

On our DM3730 target board, the similar problem has occurred.
Did you resolve your problem?
I am looking for the root cause.

usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
cdc_ether 1-1:1.0: usb1: unregister 'cdc_ether' usb-ehci-omap.0-1, CDC Ethernet Device

This is due to pll clock drifting in DM3730.

It has been explained in DM3730 errata.

Try this patch. It worked for me.
