Format SATA Fails

I'm trying to format my 2TB HDD connected to SATA0 on the EVM. I am able to see /dev/sda and so i created a partition using fdisk. When I try to format using mfks, mkfs.ext2, mke2fs, ect. it starts the process and then epic fails. Here is my console output:

root@dm816x-evm:~# fdisk /dev/sda

What am I missing? Is the 2TB HDD just to much for the EVM? Is this because I'm booted NFS/TFTP?

Thanks All!

  • Hello, Troy Wood

I tried to connect a SATA HDD to my dm816x. The format was successful, and I am coping files back and forth; it works. There are many possibilities what could be wrong on your side. You can try first with something more simple:

    <DM816X># mkdosfs -F32 -I /dev/sdX

just to see is this working. Of cource you can always ext format the disk on your host and then attach it to the board. If you're still having problems, write again please.

    BR

  • I tried FAT32 as you suggested with similar errors and a failed result.

I gave up and replaced the 2TB drive with a 1TB drive and the format at ext3 worked flawlessly. I am now capturing and playing back without fail.

So it begs the questions, was the 2TB simply to much or was it a compatibility issue with the drive itself? It is 3Gbps so it should have worked, but I'll have to scratch it off the list of possible drives for the end product.

Is there a list of tested HDD's in the 2TB flavor?

    Thanks-

  • Hello, Troy Wood

I am not sure that such list (of tested HDDs) exists, I have to check this out, but I don't think that it should differs from a common Linux system. Currently I don't have a 2TB HDD, and I don't know that I'll be able to reproduce your issue, but I will try.

Please tell me, what happens when you format the 2TB HDD on your Linux host and then connect it to the board, is it working that way?

    BR

  • Formatting on the host at ext3 and then connecting to the EVM works, not sure why formatting the same drive on the EVM would fail.

I've ordered a 2TB drive from a different manufacturer to see if the problem persists, if not then I will just assume it is an incompatibility with that drive model.

    Thanks for your assistance-

    Troy

  • Hello, Try Wood

Please inform me again when you test your new drive from different manufacturer; what was the behaviour. Thank you.

    BR
