Initializing SPI-Flash with boot-code on C6742 without CCS

Hello everybody,

we are doing a design for the C6742 with a SPI-Flash for boot-code.

During development we will use CCSv5 with a XDS100 JTAG Interface. With this tools I can load the SPI-Flash, am I right?

But in production this method is not applicable. How can I program the SPI-Flash over JTAG (with or without XDS100) without CCS? I found a SDFLASH utility from SpectrumDigital. Does this utility work with a XDS100?

For C6747/C6748 I saw another method over UART. Is this also possible with C6742?

All procedures described fro C6748 also apply to C6748. The serial flashing and boot utilities contains the the UART based flashing tool to program the SPI flash.

Ok, programming over UART will work with the C6748 utilities. But this answers not all of my questions. Is it possible to program the SPI-Flash over JTAG with CCS and XDS100?

And in production is it possible to program it without CCS and with XDS100 over JTAG? With the XDS510 a utilitiy named SDFLASH is provided. Does this one work with C6742? And does it work with XDS100?

By the way, the last link to boot loader App note doesn't work. But I looked at the link and downloaded spraat2e.pdf manually.

Bernd,

Yes, the serial flash and boot utilities that we provide also comes with CCS project for the SPI writer which you can be used to program your boot image into the flash using an emulator.

With regards to programming the flash with XDS100 over JTAG without CCS, I am not aware of the SDFLASH utility provided by spectrum so this is something only they can answer. We do provide a utility called LoadTI as part of CCS v4/v5 installation which is basically a command line utility to load and run an executable on the device without requiring the CCS GUI. Perhaps, if you use the LoadTI utility with the SPI Writer binary, you should be able to create an automated script that programs the flash with boot image from command line.
