HDMI output for OMAP4460 Blaze

Hi,

I have the problem about the image which output from HDMI interface.
The image always get blurred when output from HDMI interface with the resolution = 1920x1080.

The reason why the image get blurred I think the reason might be
"The same input image from the pipeline for both DSI and HDMI video encoder.
It uses the mirror method to duplicate and expand the image as the input image
for the video encoder."

Is that correct ?

Could you please let me know which software release and hardware platform you are using for this test?

Are you referring to Cloning feature as Mirroring which clones the data on LCD on to HDMI?

What timings is the HDMI TV configured for? Is it picking 720p or 1080p timing?

Yes , In my opinion , the resolution of our LCD = 800x480 and HDMI = 1920x1080 , so HDMI video encoder need to expand current data

from 800x480 to the 1920x1080.It is the reason why the image get blurred from HDMI. Is that correct ?

It will pick 1080p.

Could you please let me know the output of the following sysfs commands on your set up to know more details on the HDMI timings selected and overlay parameters?

You are right, the OMAP4 DSS subsystem would resize the image to fit the screen size of HDMI TV which would result in stretching that translates in to blur. You need to make modifications to have HDMI timing picked which maintains aspect ratio with respect to LCD resolution. This would avoid resizing and keeps the image in center.

Hi Venkat ,

This mean even I play 1080p video on omap4460 , but HDMI still can't output real 1080p quality video. The 1080p video will fit to the screen size , then stretch to the HDMI TV size.

Are there any other methods to improve this situation ?

Hi Nicolas,

Are you seeing issue only when playback video from gallery app? Or are you seeing this issue all the time (even for UI contents)? Which board are you using at your end? Is it TI Blaze board/ Blaze Tablet or custom board? Also is there a particular reason why you are using L27.IS.2 release? Hi Nicholas,

Based on the sysfs commands output attached, it is clear that the HDMI is picking 1080p timings and therefore the cloned content which is of 800 x 480 LCD resolution would be resized to fit the screen size.

In the case of 1080p video playback, since the input resolution is same as HDMI resolution, there is no resizing involved. It would show the 1080p video at its native resolution without any issues.

If you want to avoid resizing, then you can set the output size of the overlay3 to 800, 480. Please follow the steps at http://omappedia.org/wiki/Bootargs_for_enabling_display#Set_overlay_properties for setting the overlay output size.

Another alternative is to force the HDMI to pick lower resolution timings such as 800 x 600 which is closest to your display panel resolution. Please refer to the above link for setting the HDMI timings as well.

Hi Venkat,

In the case of 1080p video playback, the panel(800x480) and hdmi (1080p) output the same result in clone mode.

the panel : the other layers remain the same size (800x480) and video playback have to scale down to 800x480

the hdmi : the other layers stretch to 1080p and video playback remain the same size (1080p).

Is that correct ?

Hi Nicholas,

Your understanding is correct. On the panel, the video playback would scale down the video to panel resolution and play it if at all video is playing on both LCD panel and HDMI.

I have another question.

So,the 1080p video playback from rtsp or http protocol like yutube will have the same procedure just like play the 1080p media file ?

Hi Nicholas,

It would have the same procedure but there is more user control associated with video playback on browser applications.

Only when the user selects full screen mode from You Tube player controls, then the video would playback at full resolution on TV, otherwise, it would resize it according to user selected size.
