programming TMS320C6713 on windows 7

The University of Antioquia, in Colombia, on its search to improve the quality of teaching offered to students majoring on Electronic Engineering acquired a set of TMS320C6713 DSKs, and so far we have been able to program them using CCS 3.1. We would like to know if there is a way in which these DSKs could be programmed on windows 7 using a later version of CCS.

  • Yes, all later versions of CCS support the DSK6713.  I use version 5.2 with my 64-bit Windows 7 PC (as well as 3.1 on a Windows XP PC).

  • This might look like a silly question, but, since the University has already purchased the DSKs, and they come with CCS v 3.1, is it possible to upgrade the CCS

to a newer version without cost?. It will be used to teach DSP to senior undergraduates (no commercial use intended).

  • You can always download the latest version of CCS and utilize the "Free" license when setting it up.  The free license is fully operational in all aspects, with the exception that it will only work with on-board emulation (i.e. which is present on your c6713 DSKs) and with XDS100 class emulators.

You would setup the target configuration file (File -> New -> Target Configuration) like this:

  • Thank you very much for your answer. I couldn't find the "verify answer" button, but it surely was what I was looking for.

  • I "verified" for you.  You have to be logged into the forum to see it.  No big deal.

  • Hello,

I intend to do this exact same thing in our Labs.  We also have the C6713 with CC3.1.  I am the school's IT person installing the software in the lab, which we have moved to windows 7.  The instructor for the class says he does not use emulation for the boards?  I am unfamiliar with the setup, could you elaborate on the emulation mode verses what ever other mode he uses?

  • If you're using CCS with a c6713 EVM then JTAG emulation is involved.  The question here is whether you're using the on-board jtag emulation  (i.e. by plugging a USB cable directly from your PC to the board) or if you're using some kind of separate emulator.  If you want to use the free version of CCS then you are required to use the integrated on-board JTAG emulation.

Bottom line: Assuming you want to use the free version of CCS then plug the USB directly from your PC to the c6713 EVM and setup CCS using the configuration shown in the "verified answer" in this thread.
