ACTBP - codec is overheating

Hi,

I have purchased a couple of ACTBP boards. I have noticed, one of them has a problem with the codec. The chip overheats a lot. On the other board, the codec chip seems to be fine (no overheating observed).

I have to mention I used both boards with the same LaunchPad kit in order to eliminate any issues from within the LaunchPad.

Both ACTBP boards are Rev 2.0

Besides the overheating problem, the board seems to work fine (MP3 play/record seems to be unaffected). However, I am reluctant to use this board because of this problem.

Is this a known issues?

Thanks

  • I checked both ACTBP boards that I have to see if there's any issue with the power supply voltages on the codec overheating board.

3.3V measured 3.26V while instead of 1.8V I got 1.76V on the codec overheating board. I guess the lower voltages are due to codec's high current consumption on the faulty board.

I also tried to see if  the overheating problem is appearing only when the codec is being enabled by the DSP. I removed the provided SD card from the board to leave the DSP in bootloader mode. I don't think the bootloader enables the codec anyway so this was a convenient way for me to test the overheating problem when codec is idle.

The overheating problem was manifesting even when the DSP had nothing to do (no I2s traffic) with the codec. I guess there's a fault within the codec chip itself rather than the PCB assembly.

TI team, how can I return the faulty board?

  • Hi Bogdan,

Sorry to hear about the issue with the codec overheating... As a low power codec, this is obviously not right. If the chip is hot, It sounds like an issue in board manufacturing.

Fill out the following RMA form to complete return/ replacement.

  • Thanks Mark,

After 20-30 seconds from the power-up the codec chip gets very hot. I left it running for 5 minutes and the music seemed to play fine but the chip was hot. In fact, I couldn't keep my finger on it.

I will fill out the forms for an RMA on this board.
