Connecting an 18 bit diplay in 24 bit mode and using unused pins as GPIO

I am connecting an 18 bit display to the processor in 24 bit mode RGB888 leaving the two lsb of each color unconnected on my first prototype board.
Now for the next board run I am running out of GPIO so I want to use these 6 pins as GPIO. Can they be used as GPIO when I am running in 24 bit mode or are they locked to be RGB outputs?
