Starterware examples

I'm sorry for not providing an answer to your first question, but CodeSourcery is not mandatory for starterware example. CCS v5.1 uses its own compiler.

Please have a look at the quick start guide in the below link for StarterWare AM335x to see how you can run the demo application available with the StarterWare package.

Once you are able to run the demo, you can try other examples under the /binary directory.

Can i run the same code over sitara linux on board,  meaning if i am running linux on SK board and want to run the same starteware example, will that work ? The reason behind asking this, i want to control the LEDs, and HWtimer via linux. Is it possible ?

Hi Mandar, 

It will not work with Linux. StarterWare is a non-OS package. If you want to control the LEDs via Linux, StarterWare will not help. If you want to experience StarterWare demo , you may follow the instructions given in the Quick Start Guide.

Is there any other way i can control some peripherals (HW timer, Uart, LEDs, Interrupt) over TI's  Linux provided with the board ?
Should i go for any kind of device driver installations or some other techniques?

Additionally i followed the below links to run starterware sample code on board:

But unfortunately, i was unable to get any response from the system. I booted the board via SD card and followed the exact steps as mentioned in starterware guide.
Tested with demo, buzzer, dmtimer etc, but no response on hyperterminal as well as to the board side..

Could you please tell me, what could be the issue?

Hi Mandar, 

Did you format your SD Card using  the tool in  /tools/sd_format/ ? Dont give the path of the MLO when the tool prompts. Simply format it. 

Then copy the MLO and app (for demo) in the package directly to the SD card. The names shall not be changed.

Yes i did format SD card through "TI_SDCard_boot_utility_v1_0.exe" utility.

Below are the steps i took to complete the operation:

1. Inserted new SD card with windowsXP host PC
2. Open TI_SDCard_boot_utility_v1_0.exe utility to format the SD card.
3. Copied MLO from location : \AM335X_StarterWare_02_00_00_07\binary\armv7a\cgt_ccs\am335x\evmskAM335x\bootloader
4. Copied demo from location : C:\ti\AM335X_StarterWare_02_00_00_07\binary\armv7a\cgt_ccs\am335x\evmskAM335x\demo
5. Safely removed SD card and inserted in AM335xSK EVM.
6. Connected the board with hyperterminal.
7. Power on the board, but unable to get any response from either board or on hyperterminal..

Hi Mandar, 

I hope you formatted your SD card without giving any input for MLO for app. Then, after closing the SD card formatter window, made sure that the SD card is empty and then copied MLO and app manually.

When no SD card is inserted, after powering on the board and connecting the serial console, were you able to observe "CCC.." on the serial console when the board is reset? (presssing switch SW7)

Yes i did as per your guidance and copied the files seperately in SD card. But booting the same is not showing anything... Does this boot operation take a little time depending upon the app size & functionality ?

Yes this is one more issue. If i connect the AM335xEVM to COM port, i am able to see the output on hyperterminal while booting the board.

But in case of AM335x Starter Kit, (USB interfaced) it shows nothing, not even CCCCC.... . Tested with both hyperterminal in XP and minicom in Ubuntu10.04
I suppose i need to install Virtual COM port driver for this... Is that true?

Hi Mandar, 

I had tried with Teraterm without installing any virtual com port and it worked for me. I hope you have set the baud rate, parity etc. as per the user guide. You may find some more details in the below link

Yes I followed the link and set the baud rate and parity as guided.

The starter kit is without JTAG header installed and expected to use thorugh XD100 via USB... But whn i connect the board either to hyperterminal or minicom, nothing is being shown... Di i need to take any extra arrangement for that...?

One more issue is that, Can i access HWtimer and LEDs on the board through sitara Linux API.?

Meaning i can run the starterware programs for various peripherals such as timer, uart, led, accelerometer etc which is no OS platform.
If i am running the Starter Kit with sitara linux, would i able to do the same operations as i was doing in case on starterware.?

An early response would be appreciable.

I dont think if in linux, we have any apis.. but after linux is booted, you might be able to use some commands to toggle LEDs.

StarterWare is very simple and if you want to do such experiments with LED and Timers ,you can use StarterWare itself.

What about my questions on toggling the LEDs when logged in with Linux.?
I navigated to /sys/class/gpio/ and tried to set the values for GPIO pins..
Could you exactly tell me about the steps to take to toggle LEDs. Would this link help : http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/GPIO_Driver_Guide   ? ?
