About the boot NAND flash

Hi Mr,

The reference manual of AM3352 show that it support for large page size (2048 bytes + 64 spare bytes) or very large page size 4096 bytes + 128 /

218 spare bytes) when booting from NAND flash. We select a 8Gb 16 bit Micron Flash (MT29F8G16ABACAWP:C), it page size is as below:

– Page size x8: 4320 bytes (4096 + 224 bytes)
– Page size x16: 2160 words (2048 + 112 words)

Can this flash be supported by AM3352?

And the reference manual of AM3352 show that it "only supports devices where Chip Select can be de-asserted during read, program or erase cycles,

without interrupting the operation". Does this feature exist on normal NADN flash, such as Micorn/MT29F8G16ABACAWP:C?

Hi Cosmo,

Since this NAND device is ONFI compliant, it should be supported by the AM335X boot ROM code (see AM335X TRM section 26.1.7.4.2 Initialization and Detection.

You must pay more attention to ECC issue not only ONFI.

Hi Ferhat,

What do you mean about the ECC issue? The flash we selected doesn't support embedded ECC, is that OK?

Hi Biser,

Does the difference of spare bytes matter? Such as the spare bytes number exceed the spec of AM335x (218bytes).

Thanks for your reply. It seems that I should disable the ECC on AM3352 when I used 4k page size (1024 partial page) NAND flash according to thomas ng's situation.

I want to use a 8Gb/16bits NAND flash in our system. The only 16bits NAND flash Vendor is Micron. I found a 2k page size NAND flash "MT29F8G16ADADA". But it doesn't have the TSOP package which is easy for replacing. “纠结……” -_-

Hi Cosmo,

Yes, you are right to disabling ECC mechanism when you select 4K page size? But you must try UBOOT and LINUX work properly.

You can change EVM NAND TSOP package with what you want and test it. Do not forget share test results with this forum.
