Help Required in Selecting appropriate Development kit for android

Hi,
I'm a new embedded system designer and know very little about android embedded development boards/kits. The task assigned to me is to search for a suitable android development kit which mainly focuses on enabling usb host capability in earlier versions of android. For that, i am required to test the capability for all android versions before honeycomb and later android versions. My questions are:

Can any one point me to a development kit that has the capability of running multiple android versions/kernels?

Drivers or any other customization performed on ABC kit will also work for any XYZ smartphone or tablet? or kit's hardware should be the same as is for tablet or mobile for which i intend to customize the hardware?

Nisar,

Try BeagleBoard-xM. It has support for USB host as well as previous versions of Android is also supported.

Hi Renjith, Appreciate your suggestion.

Actually the two questions that i posted are pretty much confusing to me. Is it possible that we get a single kit and we port different android versions and kernels on it for testing? For what i inferred so for is that only one android version with corresponding kernel version can be used per kit, am i right?

I'm also getting confused. Can you describe what exactly is the final requirement?

I proposed Beagle-xM because most of the Android older versions are already supported. As far as I remember right from Donut, Eclair, Froyo and GB are supported in Beagle-xM.

Let me rephrase my question.

Does a single android kit support multiple android versions?

For example, if i use beagle-XM board with android 2.2, is it possible to port higher version like android 2.3 or 3.1 on the same board?

Yes, Beagle-xM support 2.2 and it can support 2.3 and forward.

will this support is only for specific/customized android version provided by beagleboard or it can be any generic OS of android from some other source?

If you take generic Android, it may not be ported for Beagle Board and also multimedia and graphics hardware acceleration specific for OMAP3 will not be available. So, it will not really work for you. It will be better to take the ported one for BeagleBoard.
