mpeg-4 bitrate

Guru 20755 points

Hello,

According to tables in MPEG-4 part 2 standard,  the maximum bitrate is 8Mbit/sec , but I see in MPEG-4 decoder user's guide in the "frequently asked questions" it is said that the maximum is 30 Mbit/sec. How to solve this contradiction: Is the encoder bit rate different from decoder's bit rate ?

Regards,

Ran

  • Ran,

In the MPEG4 encoder users guide it is written:

    Note:
For the supported maxBitRate values, see Table A.1 – Level Limits in
    ISO/IEC 14496-2:2003.
The following fields of IVIDENC2_Params data structure are level
    dependent:

    • maxHeight
    • maxWidth
The encoder output bitrates are comply with the level limit limits of the standard.
As for the decoder, it can sustain streams up to 30 Mbps and this ability is dependent on the hardware / software of the decoder. there is no contradiction in this case.
