DDR2 SD Ram with AM3352

I am designing a custom board which includes DDR2 SD RAM. I intend to have 128MB RAM (1Gbit) but i am confused as to what to choose between as i have an option between using 128MB 16 bit RAM or 2 banks of 64MB 8 bit .  So in general my question , which will have a better performance one 16 bit or 2 8 bit ?

Also what is the difference between WBGA package and FBGA package ? I ask this because sourcing of  this one RAM that i have access to is available in 84WBGA , but if later on i want to replace it with RAM from any other manufacturer , all of them come in FBGA . So is their a major design decision over here too.

Thanks,

  • Hi Nitesh,

On your first question: both 2x8-bit and 1x16 bit will have the same performance. However one 16-bit memory will probably be easier to route on the PCB, as you won't have to match segment lengths on the Address/Contol and Clock lines between the two memories. Another decision maker may be price and availability - which option will come cheaper and is more readily available.

On your second question: I think you should compare the mechanical drawings of the two packages, from their datasheets. If they have the same footprint and pinout there should be no problem to exchange them.
