Which TMS320 chip in Pro Tools|HDX systems?

This year, Avid has announced a new audio DSP system to replace their older Motorola 56k based HD product. They describe it as a 32-bit floating point system based on the TMS320, but do not specify which chip in the family. I'm very curious to know which Texas Instruments part number they're using.

I am most familiar with the C5000 series, but I assume that they're using the C6000 for floating point performance over power consumption, since they're based on a PCIe card. I really don't know whether it would be a C67x or C64x, or even another model, so perhaps someone here knows.

The Avid sales rep had no knowledge beyond the TMS320 family name. The system is capable of 64-bit float processing streams, but I suppose that doesn't really narrow the options.

  • Brian,

If I knew the answer of which TI processor Avid is using in this un-named product, I would not tell you. Nothing personal toward you, but TI would not reveal private information about a customer's product without their permission. And we would rarely ask for that permission.

I do not deal with them at all, but according to your statement above, Avid has apparently made a very good engineering decision to take advantage of the TI TMS320 family of DSPs, whichever product they chose to use.

Their reasons for choosing a particular device will be different than your reason for choosing a TI TMS320 DSP. So if you have a product you want to develop with leading technology, please feel free to browse the Applications area of TI.com, and search the TI Wiki Pages for articles that might be relevant either to your application or your selected DSP.

    Regards,

  • Randy,

Thank you for your reply. I did not expect anyone from TI to reveal customer information. It seems possible to me that the information has been revealed publicly somewhere, and I am simply not aware of it. Sometimes Google cannot find everything. If the information is publicly known, then I was hoping someone might provide a link. My understanding is that the E2E Community exists both for discussion between TI customers as well as from TI directly. I did not intend to imply that I wanted anyone - inside or outside TI - to publish information if it was not already publicly available.

The un-named product is the Pro Tools HDX Family, which is an entire line of hardware accelerators sharing a common code-base so end users can buy plug-in software for audio processing and run it without the limitations of general purpose CPU chips. Digidesign spent decades with plug-in software based around the Motorola 56k DSP, and it is exciting to see them move to a new platform. I'm sure that I could sign up for their DSP software development program and would quickly find answers to my questions.

As for my own hardware development, I have most recently designed and shipped a product based on the C5506 from the TMS320 DSP family. Looking forward, I should have no problem selecting the right device for any given task. Texas Instruments maintains one of the most informative web sites in the industry.

    Thanks again.
