C6711 DSK trouble loading "Hello world!"

Greetings,

As a gift to self I snagged a C6711 DSK on ebay.  It came with the board, power supply, power cord, parallel port cable, software CD, and some of the documentation. It came with the "Code Composer Studio 1.23 for C6211/C6711 DSK Quick Start Guide." There is no "Hardware Installation Quick Start Guide." I'm using a Windows XP host. The hardware was connected with the computer turned off. The software installation went without incident. I followed the directions for creating a "Hello World"  project. It compiled without issue. When I tried to load it into the DSK I got errors about the addresses not being valid. According to my understanding of the memory map, it should have been okay.

I ran the POST and it did not report errors.

Thank you for any ideas on what the problem might be.

  • Hi Bob,

The TMS320C6711DSK used a parallel interface.  If memory serves me, it was partial to address 0x378 in an EPP configuration.  It also wanted a 'true' parallel port interface, not one of the USB to parallel adapter types you might find at your local Fry's or Micro Center.  On my old XP laptop, I used a PCI to Parallel port card - I forget the name of the vendor at the moment, but I'll look it up and send it along once I find it.  Not sure if this is the problem you are facing, but it might be worth a shot.

  • Thanks for the reply. Your memory is correct, this board uses a parallel port. My XP computer is a refurbished HP with a "real" parallel printer port. (Don't have anything else that uses a parallel port to test it.)   I didn't know if there was some kind of loop-back program to test the parallel port.

  • Not sure if there was a loop back test on this board or not, you might try asking Spectrum Digital as well - they are the folks that put the C6711DSK together back in the day, Ron or Mike may be able to help there.  Their web-site is www.spectrumdigital.com.  The C6711DSK was replaced by the C6713DSK maybe ten years ago at this point...

  • Hi,

Got it to work!! I went into the BIOS printer port settings. I didn't recognize the default but "bi-directional" sounded promising so changed it. The first try at loading the program had one error and debug reported there was no program loaded. Then I tried the load again. This time no warnings/errors. Then "run" from "debug" menu. Works!!

    Thanks,

    Robert
