Evaluation Modules with XDS560V2 Emulation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6678

This is a general question pertaining to the differences in the accessable onboard emulation for TI-EVMs

For example lets consider TMDSEVM6678LE - TMS320C6678 Lite Evaluation Module with XDS560V2 Emulation and TMDSEVM6678L - TMS320C6678 Lite Evaluation Module which has a $200 price difference. I would assume by purchasing the EVM with XDS560V2 this would allow me to use a USB cable connected to the EVM and then to my computer running CCSv5 and get the faster more flexible XDS560v2 emulation for debugging/inspection? is this correct? I am confused because when I look at the external sites product images I see things like:

http://www.einfochips.com/images/tmdxevm6657le.png which leads me to believe this assumption but the confusion comes from sites like this http://www.advantech.com/Support/TI-EVM/6678le_of.aspx which do not show this extra daughter card attached in the product photo.

I think I am missing something here and would like to be enlightened on this topic. Also I recall speaking with a TI engineer awhile back that said the free license with CCS only allows connection to the board via XDS100. I am a student doing a research project under my professor and am using CCSv5 under the free license. If this is true then it would not seem necessary to buy the EVM with XDS560v2, but no where on the product info is this little bit of licensing detail mentioned...

  • On the Advantech Site, if you look at the pictures title you'll see that the picture is of a 'TMDXEVM6678L' and not an LE version.  If you read the description I've cut and pasted below, you can see it indicates it includes the Mezzanine card you're referring to.

    TMDXEVM6678LE - TMS320C6678 Lite Evaluation Module with XDS560V2 Emulation
The TMDXEVM6678LE EVM comes with XDS560V2 onboard emulation capability. The included XDS560 mezzanine card uses the TI 60-pin JTAG emulation header.

  • Thanks Chad, I suspected this was probably the case but wanted to be absolutely sure.

Could you touch upon the second part of my question

  • With onboard emulation, including mezzanine cards, that are bought on EVM packages, there is not a licensing fee for CCSv5 which is included.

  • Thank you Chad! It looks like I will be ordering a C66x EVM with XDS560v2 emulation on board and enjoying the faster program downloading and more feature rich debugging of XDS560v2.

  • Chad,

Quick related question. It doesn't look like TI eStore has the TMS320C6678LE in stock and I would like to purchase this board but can't wait long for it to come. I found one from digikey. Are there any problems with ordering from a non TI source like digikey?

Since I have CCSv5 already installed when the hardware arrives will I need to uninstall CCSv5 and re install from the supplied CD? I am assuming there will be a licenses provided when I purchase the board and I will have to change over from the "free" license to the new license after purchasing. But I could be wrong.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

  • I don't believe there would be an issue with ordering from Digikey.  That said, TI doesn't make these EVMs, we contract with the 3rd party to build the boards to our requirements and support the boards.  You may wish to contact their support line.

CCSv5 should have a support for the EVM already built in.  If you haven't upgraded to the latest version of CCSv5, I'd suggest that you go ahead and do that, it's more than likely newer than what's shipped on the disc.
