TMS320C5515 EVM DSP/BIOS 5

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C5515

Hello, I've CCS5 installed and I've the tms320c5515 evm. I created a new project for which I selected a DSP/BIOS example (clock example). It uses the GEL file from Spectrum Digital at startup and the code downloads neatly into the target using the debugger. But when I press 'run' everything crashes, even CCS5. I know the hardware and else is ok since I can run/debug any non Bios code. Would, of course, like to know waht I'm doing wrong or, failed to do.

  • Hi Laurent,

what exact versions of CCS and DSP/BIOS are you using?

  • Hi Tom, thanks for quick reply. I'm using:

    CCS version 5.3.0.00090 and

    DSP/BIOS  5.42.0.07

    Hopes this helps!

    kind regards, Laurent

  • Hi Laurent,

I'm going to try to replicate this. What "Connection" and "Board or Device" did you choose in your Target Configuration file (.ccxml)?

  • Hi Laurent,

I just tried the clk example and it work fine for me.

I used the on-board "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator" with a "EVM5515".

  • Hi Tom,

thanks for your effort. I installed the CCS v4.1 and tried to do the same thing as you did. No luck. It reported that it suffert from a power loss. So I didn't get a connection. CCS itself did not shut down however, it kept running. Then I switch back to CCS5.3 and used the JTAG with XDS100V2 again. Still I could run/debug any NON-Bios program. But a Bios makes even CCS stall and diappear. I'll try to do some more tests the next days as well.

Question: Does the XDS100V2 suffice for this job?

  • Hi Tom,

I tried the clock sample (SYS/BIOS) on a Stellaris (LM3S9B92) and it runs fine, of course using a different connection. So, the CCS5.x installation is ok, I think. It's important to notice that with the EVM5515 connection, via JTAG, is established and, downloading works fine. Stepping through the first several lines of code in main() also works. However when I 'run' even CCS5.3.0 closed spontaniously.

Maybe this helps finding the cause.

(Still, the NON DSP/BIOS application runs fine as well)

    regards, Laurent

  • Hi Laurent,

Are you connecting an external debugger (emulator) to the board, or are you using the onboard one?

    I tried this EVM: http://www.ti.com/tool/tmdxevm5515

The onboard debugger on this board is a "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator" and it worked without having to use a separate GEL file.

I'd tried to just created a new target configuration file and used the defaults that are supplied with CCS v5.3.

Are you running it on Windows or Linux? Was the clock example created with CCS5.3 or in CCSv4?

  • Hi Tom,

I had no time to respond sooner. Itried the xds100Serial.exe and it responses: "No XDS100 emulators were found on the system". If I connect my external emulator xds100v2 it does find it. If I use this external emulator the NON-Bios application runs but, the Bios application(clk) crashes and ccsv5 closes. Using the onboard emulator I also get errors like:

    and:

    Hope this might help.

    regards, Laurent

  • Hi Tom,

I did some further tests. Here the results:

    Problem with the evm5515:

    1) using the onboard emu usb:

drivers are correctly installed:  SD USB Based Debug Tools    Spectrum Digital TMS320C5510 DSK

When, after powering up and connecting the 'emu usb' I run the xds100serial.exe utility from Code Composer v5.3.0 it states that no emulation device was found. Also the connection between CCS and the board fails.

TargetConfig(ccxml) "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator" CPU properties: initialization script: ..\..\emulation\boards\evm5515_v1\gel\evm5515.gel

    Error messages occur like:

Error Detected in Registrattion with RTDX. Aborting RTDX Registration. RTDX is disabled for this session. Contact your Emulator vendor and use CCSetup to select a different one.

In both NON-BIOS and BIOS cases, after pressing OK CCS crashes and closes.

Remark: where do I find CCSetup

    2) Using an external xds100v2:

Code Composer runs fine when I debug a NON-BIOS program

Code Compiler crashes when I try to debug a DSP/BIOS program, as soon as I press 'run' CCS crashes and closes.

    TMS320C5515 EVM ASSY 512700 REV C (at least it looks like a "C") S/N C5F_1205009

    what to do?

    kind regards, Laurent

  • Hi Laurent,

I'm not sure what the problem is just yet. I'll have to check with some folks who know more on the emulators.

In the mean time, can you go to CCS and run Help --> Check for Updates? They have emulator updates for "Spectrum Digital Emulators".

  • Hi Tom,

good news, everything works now. I completely removed everything concerning ccs from my workstation. Downloaded ccs v5.3.0, re-installed it and .... it all works now. Also the onboard emulator. Originally I had an upgrade from 5.2.0 to 5.3.0. Anyway thanks for youre help.
