Using Am335X with one 4Gbit 16 bits DDRAM3

We want to use Am335x with ONLY ONE (due to space constraint) 16 bits 4Gbit chip (512 Mb)

I read some answers from this forum about DDR3 using and have some doubts about it.

For example, some  wrote that is max supported chip for DDRAM using 2Gbit , what creates some

doubts to me. I personaly didn't find this information in TI documents.

Also Starter Kit is built around 2Gb (256MB), not 4Gbit chip? I don't know if this concerns this restriction

or simple maybe 4Gbit chip wasn't available in this time.

It is strange that MAX total supported memory is 1GB and is possible use only one 16 bits Chip ?

It doesn't make any sense if it is true that is max allowed chip 2Gb.

To conclude: Could I get answer if possible use Am335X with ONLY ONE DDRAM3 4Gbit (X16) chip to have 512Mb memory ?

Thank in advance

  • Hi Semir,

The AM335X EMIF addresses up to 1G Byte external memory. In your case 4G bit = 512M Byte, so I don't see any problem. You should check the AM335X Datasheet, section 5.6.2.3 for DDR3 design guidelines. All the latest AM335X documentation (Datasheet, Errata, Technical Reference Manual) can be downloaded from the TI AM335X product pages.
