PCIE issue in DM8168EVM board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP

Hello,

I found the pcie interface can't work normally now, which can't detect the device(RTL8111C) nic which works well in other board).

SW5-1 (PCIe RST) switch was set to OFF.(near PCIE SLOT)

when power on ,there is nothing output from the serial port.

But when I unplug RTL8111C,then power on,the board works normally.

  • Hi Alvin,

    Are you using EZSDK 5.05.02.00? Could you provide full log.

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Thanks for your reply,I'm now using ezsdk_dm816x-evm_5_04_00_11.

    I give B10 a 3.3V power,and then evm8168 start-up, drive the equipment RTL8111C,but the NIC device don't work.

  • Hi Alvin,

    Are you trying to boot from PCIe, or you need to boot from MMC/SD card only? Are you using the DM816x PCIe as Root Complex (RC) or End Point (EP)?

    Can you try with our latest EZSDK 5.05.02.00, it might solve your issue, as we have many bug fixed and improvements in this EZSDK version.

    Also, we have some info in the thread below, that might be in help:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/203007.aspx

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Enabling_Multiple_Ethernet_Ports_on_TI81xx_Devices_for_Substation_Automation_Applications

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/106374.aspx

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Hi Pavel

    I just need to boot from MMC/SD card only and I use the DM8168 PCIE as End Point.

    I can't ping pc from EVMDM8168 through RTL8111C.

    Today,I will try BCM5751 on DM8168.This  is official recommendation.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/DM81xx_AM38xx_PCI_Express_Root_Complex_Driver_User_Guide#Loading_the_EP_Driver

    If it doesn't work,I will try  EZSDK 5.05.02.00.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Pavel

    I've tried BCM5751 and EZSDK 5.05.02.00 .but it always can't work..

  • Alvin,

    alvin lu said:
    I use the DM8168 PCIE as End Point

    Per my understanding, to use RTL8111C or BCM5751 with DM8168 PCIe, you should have the following configuration:

    DM8168 PCIe RC <-> BCM5771 EP

    As you are using the DM8168 PCIe in EP mode (not in RC mode), can this be the root cause for the issue?

    Regards,

    Pavel

    now,the eth0 is BCM5751,but I always can't ping.

  • Alvin,

    Can you try to ping without the PCIe involved? I mean can you connect the DM816x EVM with your PC with an ethernet cable and do successful "ping" between these two.

    This is what I have in this case:

  • Hi Pavel,Thanks for your reply.

  • Alvin,

    I do not have PCIe cable and BCM5751 chip, I have only DM816X EVM. I contacted the wiki page owner, I hope we will have an answer soon.

    Meanwhile, I noticed something from the wiki page, that I do not see in your logs:

    TI8168_EVM# lspci -v

    • The above output shows following devices are in the system

    00:00.0 => DM816x PCIe RC Host
    01:00.0 => Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express Endpoint

    I do not see in your logs the lines in red colour, do you know why is that?
    Can you double check the steps from the wiki page.

    Other thing I noticed is:

    [*] Networking support ---> ==> Device Drivers --->
    ==> [*] Network device support --->
    • After selecting above, entering inside "Network device support" shows...

    --- Network device support

    ==> [*] Ethernet (1000 Mbit) --->

    <M> Broadcom Tigon3 support

    Note that it is recommended to have this interface in different domain than DM816x EMAC interfaces. Other option could be to set up preference to this interface by setting 'metric' or bring DM816x EMAC interface(s) down so that Linux network stack will use PCIe Ethernet interface for network communications.

    You followed these steps, right?

    Regards,
    Pavel

  • Pavel

    I have also thought about the logs without  the lines in red colour,But I do not understand why the lack of these few.

    would you mean I shuld disabled On-chip Ethernet ports (Port0 and Port1) when I use the PCIE NIC?

    I've tried get On-chip Ethernet ports (Port0 and Port1) down ,but PCIE NIC always doesn't work.

    I am a step-by-step in accordance with the user guide to do all of this.

  • Alvin,

    alvin lu said:
    would you mean I shuld disabled On-chip Ethernet ports (Port0 and Port1) when I use the PCIE NIC?

    Yes, this is recommended in the wiki page:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/DM81xx_AM38xx_PCI_Express_Root_Complex_Driver_User_Guide#Loading_the_EP_Driver

    bring DM816x EMAC interface(s) down so that Linux network stack will use PCIe Ethernet interface for network communications.

    Check also the troubleshooting page, might be in help:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/DM81xx_AM38xx_PCI_Express_Root_Complex_Driver_User_Guide#Troubleshooting

  • thanks for your replay .

    But our project need to use three Ethernet and each with independent MAC.

    can you help me?

  • Alvin,

    Our PCIe expert responded on your other thread: http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/264103.aspx

    Please work with him there.

    Best regards,
