When I post a message to a mailbox I pass the address of the message. Is the message then copied to an internal buffer for the mailbox? If so then I can free the memory used in the post after the post is made since it has been copied anyway.

Yes. The message is copied into an internal static buffer. Once posted, the message source is no longer needed by Mailbox.
