Newbie to Sitara, & Android Seeking a good starting point

Based on my investigation is it correct to say that I have to use ubuntu OS to develop software/firmware for sitara.

Can I use CCS V5 on windows 7.

Hi,

If you plan to use the StarterWare development package, you can use CCS v5 on a Windows host with no issues. Please refer to this guide for the requirements: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/StarterWare_Getting_Started_02.00.XX.XX#Host_platform_Requirements

If you plan to use the Sitara Linux development package, you need to install a Linux virtual machine on your Windows host as written in this guide: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Sitara_Linux_Software_Developer%E2%80%99s_Guide#Start_your_Linux_Development

I am trying to evaluate if we can use the TI Sitara for a project. Therefore I am looking to quickly evaluate if should use the TI sitara or go with another vendor. 

At this point all we need to do is write small program like "Hello World" on the display of the TI Sitara starter kit. 

Any suggestion without Thoroughly reading the the user guides.

I have followed the following link

Under Host (PC) Setup requirements it references sun-java6-jdk. 

I understand that sun-java6-jdk is not supported on Ubuntu. What does TI recommend. openjdk or oracle jdk.

Also the above page has not been updated since August of 2012. Can you please tell me what the procedure for updates.

I will try this link. But this link state I need to have AM335x Starter Kit 1.2 rev. I have 1.1A rev. Will this matter.

Starter Kit rev 1.1 will not work 'as is' with the current u-boot/kernel sources. You have to make some modifications at least in the kernel sources to get rev 1.1 working.

Please have a look at the changelog for board-am335xevm.c (http://gitorious.org/rowboat/kernel/blobs/history/rowboat-am335x-kernel-3.2/arch/arm/mach-omap2/board-am335xevm.c) you will see some commits specific to Starter Kit  rev1.2. Try reverting those changes and see it it works for you.

Can you please point me to TI Android Development Guide  for AM335x starter kit Rev 1.1?

I also looked at TI Android ICS-4.0.3-DevKit-3.0.1 Developer Guide but document only specifies AM335 EVM and Beaglebone

I don't think there is any Public release supporting Starter Kit rev 1.1. You need to modify the sources as I mentioned earlier.
