SIL2 for DSP/BIOS

Hello!

We are prototyping a board based on DSP/BIOS to obtain IEC 61508 certification (SIL 2). The development envirionment is as below:

Type

TI TMS320C5505

SW-Development Environment

Compiler

TI Code Composer Studio 3.3:

Integrated Development Environment: Compiler(v4.3.6) and Linker(v4.3.6) for C5000 DSP

Operating System

TI DSP/BIOS 5.41.04.18

In order to perform the failure analysis for DSP/BIOS I want to get more possible and reltated documents to support us safety requirements, for example:

• Safety requirement specification
• Design documents
• Verification and validation reports
• Development process handbook
• Bug reports
• Proven-in-use reports

Although I know the DSP/BIOS is not SIL OS, could we get more documents to do safety arguments to TUV?

We don't have most of this information available for DSP/BIOS or SYS/BIOS. In addition, even when we have some information (e.g. bug reports, test reports), we are not staffed to provide these in appropriate documentary form to support safety-related applications. For SYS/BIOS, we can product some kind of test report and we have a doc for the basic test process. However, we don't have anything similar for DSP/BIOS.

Anyway, we want to get more possible documents form you side to support our safety design. In the application, we only use Task,s Semaphores and Hardware interrupts on DSP/BIOS.

Many safety measures are implemented in our design to control and avoid the DSP/BIOS failure. If more verification and validation reports of DSP/BIOS are available, it will be more confident for us to use.

Hello Merrick,

it looks like we are facing very similar issues (for an OMAP-L137 processor) and for a different (but close) DSP/BIOS version: 5.41.02.14.

How did you solve the problem in the end? Were you able to get anything from TI or to justify differently to TUV the use and the reliabilty of DSP/BIOS?

Hi Ivan,

I have gotten some information from TI. It said TI DSPBIOS has been deployed in a number of high reliability applications. An example is that an C5500 avionics application customer that required DO-178B Level B certification. Customer licensed the V5.32 ( a earlier minor version comparing to V5.41) source code and perform the certification requirements (code coverage, etc.).

This is a quite strong evidence. Additionally, we prepared the DSP/BIOS failure analysis and test cases.Although our product has not passed the SIL2 qualification, we are confident to negotiate with TUV.

If it could be possible to have the source code of version 5.41 from TI we may do the same thing. For the time being we have prepared a failure analysis as you did.
