Key Stone EVM selection guide

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6678, 66AK2E05

Hello

We are plan to buy key stone evm kit (TMS320C6678). In TI shop there is two kind of evm are available TMDSEVM6678L and TMDSEVM6678LE. There is $200 difference because of XDS560V2 emulator.

Which means if i purchase TMDSEVM6678L i couldn't debug it or i can debug in CCS via USB or something?

What are the other difference between these evm and which one i can purchase for better development?

      Suggest me to get EVM.

Thanks

Sangly

  • Hi Sangly,

there's a nice comparision table available from Spectrum Digital:

    http://emulators.spectrumdigital.com/files/Emulator_Comparison.pdf

Just as a hint: If you buy the XDS560v2 standalone it's much more expensive. But the XDS560v2 that comes with the EVM only works with the EVM, not with other boards.

    Kind regards,

    one and zero

  • To clarify, no you don't need a separate emulation for the L version.  It has a XDS100 built into the card.  The LE version has the XDS560v2 Mezzanine card included and as mentioned by One and Zero, this is only for this card.

If you have your own emulator already (i.e. own another XDS... emulator, you'll be able to use it with the card as well through the TI-60 pin header - it may require an adaptor though.)

  • Hello

Do i should need XDS560v2 emulator or XDS100 is enough for development purpose?

What is the benefit of  XDS560v2 compare to XDS100 regarding software & debugging efficiency on TMS320C6678 ?

    Thanks

    Sangly

  • Sangly,

In general it's enough for basic level development.  There are features and performance improvements that you'll see from the XDS560v2 that make it a much richer debugging emulator.  The Link that One and Zero provided gives a breakdown of the differences in feature set.

I'd personally recommend going with the LE to get the 560v2.  A normal 560v2 standalone emulator runs around $1500 typically, it's definitely worth it if this is the only EVM you'll be purchasing to have the extra debug and speed (download speed, refresh speed, etc.)  If you're planning on buying several (or multiple platforms) you may consider the L and getting a XDS560v2 standalone emulator to work with them later if you find you need the extra debugging or performance.

  • Thanks Mr.Chad Courtney,

Thanks for your valuable advice. Any information about ARM+DSP keystone evm kit? It will take long time to release or any estimated time is there?

I've another question, current evm have just 512RAM but we need more than 4GB RAM because of our application requirement.

Any way to get 4GB updated RAM with evm?

  • EVMs are for evaluation, and usually don't have large amounts of memories included to help keep costs of the Evaluation Modules down.

Is there a specific device you're referring to for ARM+DSP Keystone EVM kit?

    Best Regards,
    Chad

  • Hello Chad

               Thanks for your response.

Not a specific evm. currently there is evm for TMS320c6678 (Multi core DSP), i was mentioned evm for 66AK2E05 (ARM+DSP)Soc. Is there any plan to release?

  • The 66AK2E05 device should be sampling in early 1Q14 and I'd expect the associated EVMs to be available sometime later in 1Q14.  Usually there is about 2 months between first Si and getting production EVMs out.

  • Hello

We decide to buy TMDSEVM6678LE because of XDS560V2. But i have question towards debugging it with ccsv5 IDE.

We have 90 days free version of CCSv5  can we use this for debugging with XDS560V2? or we can use only XDSv100 emulator in 90 days trial version of ccsv5?

  • The EVM comes with CCSv5.  It will be usable with the EVM for the lifetime of the device.  You will be able to update it as well and it will work with both the 560v2 Mezz and XDSv100.  It's a fully function version, for use with the EVM, but will have the same limitations as a trial version for non-EVMs.

    Best Regards,

    Chad
