Can you use both LCD and the PRUSS Ethernet on AM335x?

Hi,

I have a chicken and the egg problem.

I don't yet know enough about the AM335x and all of it's peripherals to properly set it up. If I use the chip, I'll have to study the documents and learn all about it. But I don't want to go through all that work, only to discover the chip doesn't support the combination of features I want to use.

I need: Profinet - so the PRUSS running at least 1 ethernet port, SPI, at least 16 bits of TFT LCD, preferably all 24 bits,

I notice neither the ICE nor the I A EVM support LCD. Is it impossible to get both LCD and industrial ethernet at the same time?

Hi Bob,

Yes it's possible to have both LCD and PRUSS1 at the same time.

I would assume there are some limits at least for 24bit LCD together with using both PRU-MII... I would suggest anyone with such questions to at least to download the free pin-mux tool and evaluate the capabilities this way. There are always several things to consider when doing a system pin-mux.

Future devices will have more pins hopefully...

This brings back the chicken and the egg problem.

I know which pins of the LCD I need for my panel, but I'm not as familiar with ethernet.

Which features of the PRO-MII do I need in order to run Profinet ( which isn't released yet) or Ethercat (which is)?

Hi Biser,

The pinmux utility only shows 1 set of lcd pins. With this set selected, I can't select any MII0 PRUSS1 or MII1 PRUSS1 set without many conflicts. If I were an expert at this, I would take this to mean that I just can't do what I want. Since I'm not expert, I can't help wondering, (ok, hoping) that I'm just doing something wrong, and someone else will be able to set me straight.

Hi Bob,

Yes, LCD is available only at one location. On the ZCZ package it doesn't conflict with MII1_PRUSS1, but heavily conflicts with MII0_PRUSS1. Conclusion is that you can't have both LCD and the two PRUSS MII interfaces.
