volume control during a phone call

Hi all,

Can anyone briefly explain how Android adjusts volume during a phone call?

Our customized board is similar to Mistral EVM with a 3G modem integrated in it. I'm running Android JB 4.1.2 on it. Two hard keys are mapped to Volume Up and Volume Down. The volume can be adjusted when playing mp3 songs by pressing those two keys. I can make a phone call if a SIM card is inserted and talk on phone. However the volume cannot be adjusted by pressing Volume keys.

I prefer to control the volume in RIL when having a phone call but don't know how to do it.

Does anyone have experience in this area?
