OMAP 5 1080p30 encode support

Expert 4565 points

Hi,

I'm looking for a TI solution for a someone that needs two 1080p30 with H.264. They currently are using an OMAP5 device. Based on looking at product specs it appears that this family only supports one encode stream of 1080p60. I also see that some OMAP3 devices support two 720p30 streams. It also appears that the DM81x family can support this requirement and might be a possible TI solution if the OMAP5 does not support this.

Can anyone verify these capabilities that I've found?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

  • Hello Matt,

The main features of HDMI module in OMAP5 are:

    HDMI 1.4, HDCP 1.4, and DVI 1.0 compliant – Includes support for the 3D stereoscopic frame-packing formats of the HDMI v1.4 standard (1080p24Hz, 720p50Hz, 720p60Hz + side-by-side half structure: 1080p60Hz)

    Support for deep-color mode:
    – 10-bit color component deep-color modes up to 1080p @ 60 Hz
    – 12-bit color component deep-color modes up to 720p/1080i @ 60 Hz

    Best regards,

  • Hi Yanko,

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm very inexperienced in video encoding and wanted to make sure I'm not incorrectly assuming anything. It looks like you're saying that it supports 3d frame-packing at 1080p60 which would be two streams at 1080p30 per eye. Does this mean that it has the hardware support to encoding two streams at 1080p30 even though the streams are not 3d frames?

Thank you for your patience with my learning curve!

    Matt

  • Hello Matt,

Yes, it support two streams at 1080p30 per eye. It is necessary to take in mind the proper configuration of HDMI module's registers.

By encoding of two streams at 1080p30, it must be observed - L3 interconnect and memories configurations to avoid unwanted effects.

    Best regards,

    Yanko

  • Yanko,

The customer returned with more concerns about their ability to use this device for 2x 1080p30. They are unsure of whether or not this will be supported in the API or GStreamer framework even though it may be physically possible in the hardware.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hello Matt,

I had a look in the following document http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/manual/manual.pdf

I think that it is possible GStreamer to support 2x1080p30, but the only information available in TI web site is about GStreamer DMAI Plug-In for DM355, DM365, DM357, DM6446, DM6467 and OMAP35x Processors.

Refer to this link to obtain more information about TI GStream - https://gstreamer.ti.com/gf/project/gstreamer_ti/

I suggest, if need more information about GStream framework to ask in GLSDK forum or gstreamer.ti.com blogs.

Could you provide more details about your use case?

    Best regards,

    Yanko
