Hi Volker, we have public jpeg lib for C66 which could be recompile for C674, but you will need to have an agreement for getting the source code. In case you are interested in this option please contact your FAE or TI sale representative.

The first link suggest that all the C64x+ lib can be used on C674x but I am not sure about it.
Could you please confirm if it is the case or not?

I think one of the important consideration would be if the JPEG encoder uses the QDMA (as the channels used might be hard coded in the codec directly).
Could you please confirm if the JPEG encoder uses QDMA channels?
The datasheet does seems to say that DMA (EDMA/QDMA) is not used at all:

For codec that uses QDMA I think that it likely can not be re-used on C674x.

Hi Volker,

a) The C64x+ CODECs (like JPEG, ..etc) should work on C674x. In fact those codecs are already included in the OMAP-L138 Linux SDK 4.03.00.06 that are provided with the OMAP-L138 EVM:

Please refer to Linux SDK 4.03.00.06 to see how to use the JPEG CODEC. After installation you should look at the DMAI folder to start with as there are some basic examples (in /ti-dvsdk_omapl138-evm_04_03_00_06/dmai_2.xxxx/packages/ti/sdo/dmai/apps). For JPEG you should use image_encode. The benefit of DMAI is that it supports IO access in Linux (ie video capture and diaplay) and the different CODECs

For the codec itself see the /ti-dvsdk_omapl138-evm_04_03_00_06/codecs-oampl138_04_02_xx/packages/ti/sdo/codecs/jpegenc/docs folder.
Also the simpliest exampel to use a CODEC is located in the jpegenc/app/Client/Test/ folder. It is just a stand alone example that does not make use of the other libs (DMAI, Codec Engine, ..etc).

- For more information on Codec Engine, DMAI, XDAISxDM and CODECs please look at the below training (DM644x/OMAP35x based training) that speaks about all those SW layers:

b) Note that the Codec Engine is not provided in the LCDK Linux SDK 1.00 so the CODECs are not present in this SDK
So there are no easy way to run the CODECs with this SDK. It is likely that you will need to stick to SDK 4.0x based on Linux 2.6.3x for using the JPEG CODEC.

May be you adapt the basic jpegenc/app/Client/Test example on the SDK 1.00 if you need.

two month later. I implemented it like you wrote. It works fine in my project for gray scale images.

In some cases i have the need to convert raw bayer or rgb images to jpg (i can deliver both, bayer or rgb). The encoder can't work with that image types and need yuv. What can i do? I need a very fast conversion algorithm.

All ti conversions i found converts from yuv to any other image types. The jpeg encoder on grey images runs in about 7ms. That is ok. I can give a little more time for the rgb to jpeg.

What do you suggest?

Hi Volker,

a) For RAW to RGB conversion you need to do some the demosaicing. We unfortunately do not have any ready to use algorithm that do that. In some device (like DM36x, DM37x, DM81xx) there is some HW as part of the Video port (VPSS VPFE) that do that in HW. But on OMAP-L13x/C674x/AM18xx devices the video port does not have this functionnality so this needs to be done in SW.
You would need to write your own algorithm for the demosaicing.

b) For RGB to YUV:
You are correct, there are different optimized fct for YUV to RGB conversion in the IMG lib and VLIB:

but I have not seen any for RGB to YUV. It should be possible to write your own one.
The IMG lib has got some good information and comparable optimization principles could be re-used for RGB to YUV.

I am not sure how much processing would be needed for RAW to RGB and then from RGB to YUV. I am not sure if it would allow to have real time raw image to J{EG conversion.
If the C674x alone is not capable to do it you could look at the following:

- One option would be to look at the PRU. The PRU has no multiplication unit but may be using the Arithmetic and logic unit you could do some basic RAW to RGB to YUV conversion (or part of it) using look up tables.
