if I reduce the resolution (640*480), FPS remains the same low.

Why is fps so low?

memory config: mem=55M@0x80000000 mem=384M@0x88000000

cmemk parameter:

Is DM3730 can encode video 720p@30FPS?

    We're trying to enable 720p (1280x720) video encoding on BeagleBoard-xM (chip DM3730) from camera with hardware acceleration (by Gstreamer). And we have the next issues:

    1. Maximum framerate (fps) we can obtain is 13-15 fps.
    2. We can't change TIVidenc1 bitRate (it encodes always in some bitrate ~200000 bps).
    3. We can't change TIPrepEncBuf contiguousInputFrame=TRUE (only FALSE).

    We used:
    1. BeagleBoard-xM (with DM3730)
    2. Gstreamer-ti plugins from DVSDK 4.03.
    3. Gstreamer pipeline uses TIPrepEncBuf and TIVidenc1.
    4. 720p videocamera.

    QUESTION:

    Is it possible to launch 720p video encoding with 24fps on DM3730 chip EVER? And HOW? Thanks for any answers!

    I am not familiar with the DVSDK and your board.

    It would be better to add the format (video/x-raw-yuv, format=\(fourcc\)NV12, width=720, height=480, framerate=30000/1001)in your pipeline:

    gst-launch -v v4l2src always-copy=FALSE input-src=Composite num-buffers=-1 ! video/x-raw-yuv, format=\(fourcc\)NV12, width=720, height=480, framerate=30000/1001 ! TIPrepEncBuf contiguousInputFrame=true ! fakesink

    If you're capturing NV12, the "TIPrepEncBuf" element might not actually be needed -- you could remove it and you will  get better performance.  You would need to add "contiguousInputFrame=true" to TIVidenc1 if you remove it though, also.

    Could you connect the  output of the encoder element to the filesink location=x.x and check the output fps of the encoded video file.

    Also it would be better to add  "queue"  element . Could you check the input fps to the encoder element. Just add the dmaiperf element before the encoder. Double check your bootargs also. If you are using fakesink make sure that the property sync is set to true(fakesink sync=true).

    I checked the debug log files. I am seeing that with the second resolution the fps is correct, but I am seeing also warnings. Could  you save the encoded video in the file and check the file also?

    I'm posting you from Michael2. We did some new tests and have had new results.

    So, we've got 30fps(!) from camera when route RAW video directly to display [camera -> DVI]:

    Ok, I modified my pipelines and I've got next result: 12 fps at encoding and 27 fps at decoding!! So, when it encodes video, for example, in 10 seconds, then it plays video in ~5 seconds and pictures go fast like in old movies!!

    As I said, I am not familiar with the DVSDK and your board. But from what I am seeing in the logs on the lower resolution it works fine. The frame rate of the encoder should depends on the number of process() calls made of the encoder per second. If the  core is clocked higher,   the encoder can achieve it. From the reply of the Tsvetolin the dm3730 support this resolution of encoding or decoding.

    Could you check the format which the encoder expect? For example the omx_h264enc  requires  NV12 so for the other formats the color conversion should be done which can case this problem with the lower fps especially if the resolution is higher.
