Problem in debugging DSP side of OMAPL137 with CCS

I followed the instructions for gaining access to the DSP for debugging according to the instructions found on the wiki site listed below.

Everything looks fine and after I boot the board and connect to the DSP, load the source file and symbols, the emulator shows the processor stopped at the appropriate point in the code. My problem occurs when I try to run to a breakpoint or single step. In either case the emulator seems to go off and not show me the next executable statement, etc. It seems as if the processor just goes off into the weeds and doesn't return control back to the debug environment. Has anyone else seen this and know what I'm doing wrong. Help is appreciated.
