OMAP processors and design tools

Hi everybody,

I have some background on 8-bit processors (AVRs) and I am thinking to switch to the strongest ARM ones.

Strong candidate is the OMAP family due to low beagleboard cost. However I am wondering about the tools needed for the desing of OMAP family. Which are they and how much do they cost...I am only a hobbyist and don't have enough to spent for them. Do any of the kickstart IAR compilers support the OMAP processors?

Thanks

/Kostas

  • The good news is that there are many tools out there available for free to develop on the OMAP3, for example see here, however they are generally built around developing for Linux as the OS on the Cortex-A8, so it is a bit of a different environment from what you find on simpler 8 bit processors. As far as I know IAR does not have a Cortex-A8 offering, at least I have never seen it being used with OMAP3.
