SDK release date(s)? (AM335x / WL8)

When can we expect the upcoming: SDK 06.0x and R 8.3+ (WL8) updates?

I'm hoping to see some updates from the WiLink 8 customer presentation (especially on the BLE side of things like BLE/WLAN Coex etc) but hopefully also a step up in linux-kernel versions (3.8 or 3.12) to be able to migrate things to device-tree for board-specific setups.

Anyone with schedule or info on what's in the pipe and when?

  • Please ask your nearest TI representative.
  • There is some WiLink8 specific info and code here:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/WL8_release_download_page#Official_Releases

I've successfully built and run using the AM335x EVM + COM8 with standard SDK "boot" and "rootfs" and adding the specific WiLink8 "addon" for both SDK06.00.00.00 and 05.07.00.00 (off SD card).

Also had to use some of the wpa_cli commands documented here:

    https://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Connect_to_Secure_AP_using_WPA_Supplicant#Connect_to_non_secured_network https://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Connect_to_Secure_AP_using_WPA_Supplicant#Connect_to_secured_network

  • Hi,

I checked with our local reps and they recommended us to go via e2e for this info. I suspect since these parts are not officially out yet it's a bit hard to find proper hardware reference guides as well as the linux sdk release roadmaps.

I realized I actually made a duplicate post on this same subject here: http://e2e.ti.com/support/arm/sitara_arm/f/791/t/293892.aspx

Again, what I'm after is a more detailed version of the AM335x / WL8 software schedule mentioned in the sales-pdf. Something like this would be amazing: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Sitara_Linux_Upstream_Status

Right now the info on the WL8_release_download_page hasn't been update since June 29, so we're a bit in the dark here.

    best

    David

  • Hey David,

On the AM335x side of things, we plan on releasing a 3.12 based SDK this coming March.

    Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh,

This is good news. At which GIT-Repository can we follow this work?

We actually did our own port to 3.12 kernel a while back and have it up and running. Not fully verified though and just got stuck on power-management / sleep-modes (arch/arm/mach-omap2/pm33xx.c) not working properly when trying to wake from deepsleep0 via a GPIO pin on bank0.

As the co-processor for this is just a binary, I was kind of hoping it to be kernel independent. Can you share more info here. Maybe you have this up & running already in the 3.12 branch?

    Thanks David

  • Hey David,

Here is the git repo: http://git.ti.com/ti-linux-kernel. The branch you'll want to look at is ti-linux-3.12.y.

The power management stuff is definitely one of the most difficult portions of the migration from 3.2 to 3.12, so there's lots of work done on that branch that should be helpful to you.  Keep in mind that the development effort is still ongoing, though, so some features may not be complete.

If you build with omap2plus_defconfig and grab the dtb for the am335x evm you are using, then it will boot just fine.  Actually, am335x should boot if you pull the latest kernel down from kernel.org, although our TI branch will have more features at this point.

Also, keep in mind that we will be releasing an official 3.12 based SDK in a few months, and that release will thoroughly tested, so that would be our recommended starting point for customers who want to develop with 3.12.

    Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh,

Thanks for sending over. We will have a look and try it out.

Is there a status-list / milestone / bug-tracker somewhere that shows what's implemented and not in the latest branch ?

Talking about this, can I find a good overview of all the AM335x specific peripheral drivers and their status in 3.2 vs 3.12 ?

    best, david

  • The thing that seem missing though is the sleep-modes (RTC-only & deepsleep0) that uses the Cortex M3 co-processor right?

it was in pm33xx which doesn't seem to exist in the 'ti-linux-3.12.y', unless it's a new name/location.

When we run 3.2 you can see this during boot (that doesn't happen on 3.12).
    [    2.764465] Power Management for AM33XX family
    [    2.769470] Trying to load am335x-pm-firmware.bin (60 secs timeout)
[    2.776184] Copied the M3 firmware to UMEM
    [    2.780578] Cortex M3 Firmware Version = 0x181

Let me know if this has been implemented.
  • Hey David,

There won't be comprehensive information available on our 3.12 kernel features until we roll our SDK out in March, so expect to see feature lists and driver guides around that time.

As for the the PM stuff, it's still being worked on right now.  There was a major shift in architecture going from 3.2 to 3.12 that affected PM for AM335x, so we won't be sure exactly what the drivers will look like until they are completed in the next few months.

    Regards,

    Josh

  • Dear Josh,

Checking in on the progress for PM / Sleep on the 3.12/.13/14 branches.

    Let me know status.

    best David

  • Hey David,

There are no updates to give as of yet, but when the new SDK comes out, there will be full documentation on PM.  I'll be sure to update this post when the release occurs so you can take a look at the new material.

  • Hi Josh,

Sorry to keep pushing this but we're already on 3.13 now just waiting for PM to come into place, so some quick questions below:

    1) When do TI plan to merge the power management patches mainline?
    2) Why is power management support completely missing from ti-linux-3.13.y and ti-linux-3.14.y?
    3) Why is wilink8 dts support missing in ti-linux-3.13.y and ti-linux-3.14.y?
    4) We found the 3.13 repo recently got overwritten with 3.14-rc1. Which one is the target to release / next AM33xx SDK?

    5) Will we see a TI backport of compat-wireless to get a compatibility stack compatible with kernels above 3.9? Specially 3.12/3.13.

    best David
  • We will be releasing our package for 3.12 in a couple of weeks.

For detailed Linux roadmap, please contact your local sales rep.

  • Hi,

How about the latest wilink8 releases, will the dts and needed patches be avail in  ti-linux-3.13.y soon?

Now it seems this one is made for 3.8 (beaglebone).

    best David

  • Dav01,

you need to post on Wilink forum,,,this is for Sitara Processors...Wilink8 comes from a different group and I am not sure they are checking this forum...
