changing OS on an embedded omap 3430 platform?

i'm talking about a smartphone, exactly the Samsung GT-i8910 Omnia hd.

it mount a 3430 omap and uses symbian s60 9.4 v5 as operating system

we(we are trying to create a little team, made by 3 IT students) are trying to change the os mounted on it (one of us tries with android, the other with a linux distribution)

now... i'd like to know, if is it possible that usb on this device, is the "serial to usb" port, (j12)(i think yes, cause it's used to flash new firmwares), and if it is possible, how we can change the standard boot loader, with xloader (with uboot)? (we are also trying to modify the bootloader used by samsung firmware, we have decompressed it, and now trying to understand what grammar it uses)

the thing, i can't understand, is, how can i modify just the bootloader, to use standard ones...

we have already solutions for future problems, but this boot loader thing, blocks us, cause we can't make practical experiments with OSes, if we can't install them on it...

i know that there would be a way to make it... cause there are similar projects, for example for i900 omnia, there are android, and ubuntu linux experiments...

eventually, thanks for help, and sorry if it would be a cause of disturb.

  • Unfortunately this is something that you may have trouble finding help for, the OMAP3430 is only for wireless customers and is not widely supported outside of that space. I am not very familair with the GT-i8910 or with how the OMAP3430 is implemented from a boot perspective in such a device, but I can say that it is probably designed to prevent you from doing what you are trying to do, in general wireless manufacturers do not like end users reflashing new OSes.

  • yes, i can understand your point of view, and i think it would be difficult... my idea was, isn't there a way to communicate directly with the omap platform ? a software, or something that permits to communicate with a "bios" ? if the usb we have on this terminal, is really a serial to usb, it would be good to have the right software
