LCD Panel Question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAP3530, SN75LVDS83B

Hello All,

I was just wondering if the OMAP3530 processor is suited to drive virtually any type of LCD display or if there are certain varieties that are better suited?

The reason I ask is that I have salvaged an old DSTN laptop LCD display and found appropriate data sheet for it. It seems to be a parallel LCD interface but quite old. Is there any chance that the processor could drive this or should I look for another display panel (maybe TFT)?

Thanks,

Chris

  • The OMAP3530 can drive a wide variety of LCDs, the interface is fairly flexible, however the TRM mentions only support for passive STN displays and I believe DSTN is considered active, for details you will probably want to take a look at chapter 15 of the TRM. Note that serial LCDs are not usable with the OMAP3530 as the SDI interface is not available. Also keep in mind that the interface on the OMAP3 was designed with smaller displays in mind, so larger and higher resolution displays with high refresh rates may not be possible due to pixel clock limitations (75MHz).

Additionally if you were to use an arbitrary LCD than you would have to modify the display drivers to work properly with it, you may want to consider using the LCD that is implemented on the Mistral EVM, or using a DVI based monitor with the implementation used in the Mistral EVM or the Beagle Board.

  • In addition to Bernies great suggestions:

Check out the SN75LVDS83B preview. This device interfaces directly to the OMAP3530 and can drive LCD panels directly that require LVDS serialized signals (e.g. the panels you find in notebooks and netbooks). If you send a quick email to lvds83b@list.ti.com  we can send you a presentation showing how to hook up the device to the OMAP side as well as a full data sheet with lot's of application drawings.

    cheers, fritz

  • Sorry for asking in old thread about this.

I've same kinda project, i'm goin to use the Beagleboard Rev.C which have LCD headers coming directly from Omap3530. Also i'll most likely use 8.9" WXGA panel and SN75LVDS83B, but here's the catch, When will the LVDS83B be available in samples and for sale also?

  • The LCD panel on the OMAP35x Mistral EVM supports VGA resolution. If you want to use higher resolutions than VGA, you can use the DVI.It supports upto 720P.

    Thanks,

    Prathap.
