Download image to EVM6678 without CCS

I've been searching the forums all day and also reading the c6x linux user's guide.  I want to make sure I understand this correctly.

I am able to get through a build of c6x and now I want to download to the 6678 EVM board.

From what I've read, to download to NAND using the USB/JTAG interface you must have CCS.

The other option is TFTP.  This is mentioned in the user's guide but not fully explained.

Can anyone tell me (or point me to a document) that shows how to download an image to the EVM from the host command line?  In my /product directory, after I build I have the following files:

gplv3-devtools-c6x-hf.cpio.gz
min-root-c6x-hf.cpio.gz
mcsdk-demo-root-c6x-hf.cpio.gz
modules-2.6.34-evmc6678.el-dev-agsc6x2-20131125.tar.gz
evmc6678-initramfs-demo.el-hf-dev-agsc6x2-20131125.cpio.gz
evmc6678-initramfs-demo.el-hf-dev-agsc6x2-20131125.bin
evmc6678-initramfs-min.el-hf-dev-agsc6x2-20131125.cpio.gz
evmc6678-initramfs-min.el-hf-dev-agsc6x2-20131125.bin

Thanks, MS

  • Please take a look at the User's Guide link under the section of Using Prebuild Binaries in the release notes of linux-c6x.org.

  • Rex,

Sorry, that doesn't get me any further.  The "Using Prebuilt Binaries" section in the release notes just points to the User Guide.  The User Guide contains instructions for using DSS/CCS and JTAG to copy to NAND (not what I want to do), but only vague instructions for using TFTP.

If I configure the DIP switches to boot from TFTP, what happens next?

    Thanks, MS

  • MS,

I see your point. I was thinking that it does not really need to fire up the CCS GUI to do the download. However, it still need to have CCS installed. Using TFTP, you can take a look at the projects/ibl/src/util/iblConfig/src/device.c, in c6678_ibl_config(), it hardcoded server IP being 192.168.1.2, and the file to be tftp'd is c6678-le.bin. Do you want to give it a try?

  • Rex,  I think I see where you're going.  If I modify device.c with my parameters, then rebuild the IBL, I should be able to follow the instructions in projects/ibl/doc to use the IBL for TFTP or NAND.  Is this what you had in mind?

    Thanks, MS

  • Not really. Modifying device.c, you will still need CCS/DSS to program the new IBL to flash. You should be able to set the dip switch to tftp boot and use the hard coded IP address and file name to boot from it. That file just to show what the IP and file name to use. You may eventually need CCS/DSS to change update IBL.

  • Ah, OK, I think I'm with you now.  If my host computer's parameters match those in device.c, when I boot the board with TFTP it will retrieve the image.  Is this correct?

    Thanks, MS

  • Yes, it should, and don't forget the dip swithc setting too.
