DM8148 HDMI Timings for "PC/AV" Modes Monitor, Scanning?

Hello All,

I have noticed there are 2 types of HDMI monitors/settings. 1st one is TV screens and 2nd one is PC monitor. Why there is difference?

We are using DM8148 and we need to support most of the formats, 1080i60, 1080i50, 720p60 720p50 etc...

Every resolution works fine with "TV screens" even 1080i50, although I need to change the image format to underscan in the TV othervise it doesn't it to screen.

However I have tried 2 different " PC monitors" and 1080i50 doesn't work. I don't think the monitor doesn't just support that  resolution. I beileve there is a setting that I am missing. Do you have any ideas.

My second question is how can I make sure that change the scanning so it will fit to screen when I connect to the "TV Monitor" so I don't need to chage the format of the image all the time.

I am using EZSDK 5_05_02_00 . I have updated the latest HDMI updates in the git repo.

Thank you in advance,

Best Regards,

Hazar

  • Make sure that the monitor is able to support 1080i50. Many monitors cannot. The manual for the monitor should indicate exactly which resolutions and formats it supports.

Regarding the need to switch on/off underscan, unfortunately this is a feature of the TV/monitor and there is no control available. Most TVs/monitors should 'remember' the setting for a specific input and/or resolution/mode though.

The different TV or PC settings come from the fact that different standards bodies control each set of video standards. In most cases where the modes/resolutions overlap the timings are the same, but this is not true for all cases.

  • Dear Steve,

Thank  you for your reply, I think you are correct with the monitor not supporting, I don't have any issues with "HDTV" monitors but problem with PC Monitors, in the manuals I can see that they support 1080i but not very clear with the frequency,

I understand that HDTV's follows CEA-861 standard. Do you know which standard computer monitor / graphic cards follows? So i can maybe try that timings, Otherwise it looks like I have to find a way to convert the output to 1080p.

It is our final bump in our project, We developed everything with "HDTV" and than some our customers want to work with computer monitors with HDMI because it is cheaper :)

  • VESA is the standards body for PC graphics.
