New to DSP

I'm working on my senior design project and my adviser recommended that I use a TI DSP unit for my control system. I've gone through a very basic tutorial, but still don't feel very comfortable with CCS. Right now, my goal is to get a bandpass filter working and I was wondering if there was any existing code that I could examine or a tutorial that could show me how to code my own. Through some experiments done last semester, it was determined that a 15th order Chebyshev filter would work best, but I could start smaller for the sake of practice.

I have the C5505 ezdsp USB Stick Dev Kit, but I'm still on winter break so I don't have it with me.

Hi Gregory,

The C5000 Teaching ROM comes to mind - http://e2e.ti.com/group/universityprogram/educators/w/wiki/2040.c5000-teaching-rom.aspx

It includes several labs and slides for audio processing like audio band pass filters, etc. You can study the slides and projects in CCS without the eZdsp.

When I think of control systems I think of C2000 - good for PID, motor control, PWM, etc.

Are you filtering audio? What control outputs are required?

The C5500 is an ultra-low power, fixed point DSP processor; it cannot do floating point natively. If your 15th order Chebyshev filter is implemented in floating point, it will only be able to run very slowly on a C5500 processor. That said, if your sample rates are low you will be fine.

FIR filters are much easier to implement in fixed point.

Thanks for the quick answers. I'll try out that tutorial once I have the DSP unit again.

Also, thanks for the heads-up, Bill. I'll keep that in mind.

The goal is to filter audio and send a control signal to a DC motor based on the frequency of the input signal.
