Using some libraries from Linux to develop a still camera inside u-boot.

Using a DM355

I would like to know if it’s possible to use some libraries (normally) used in Linux and use them in code developed inside a u-boot extension.
Functions needed: initialize an OV5620, initialize camera capture interface, capture a picture, adjust exposure, convert bayer data, resize it, and saved it in jpeg format.

Why I need to do that in u-boot, it’s because I need to take a picture from a completely off processor and OV5620, below 1 sec. It’s not possible to start the system and do those things in Linux inside a time frame of 1 sec.

Regards.

  • It is certainly feasible to port the code (e.g. register setting) to initialize the desired hardware; however, a straight cut and paste of the code will likely not work.  Much of the driver code uses Linux functions (e.g. printk instead of print....) which are likely not available in u-boot; therefore, you need to port code carefully.

  • Just to add to Juan's answer, most of the libraries (like the JPEG encoder), we use lot of linux kernel drivers. These drivers would not be available in the uBoot. Also, the capture driver that is used would also not be available.

In summary, you would have to write a small application which goes and initializes the required hardware peripherals including VPSS. For JPEG encode, you would have to get the encoder library from TI which is independent of codec and programs the registers at the lower level.
