Boot from FLASH

Hello,

I've written a bootloader for DSP6747 to be booted by ARM master (external device).

Now, instead of writting a bootloader, I decided that it would be easier to add to a program that is to be uploaded the function that copies SDRAM to FLASH, when recognizes that FLASH is empty, and next time will be uploaded from FLASH memory.

I copied the contents of SDRAM starting from 0xC3000000 address into serial FLASH memory, (number of bytes as size of my program), but it didnt work, when I tried to boot from FLASH.

I use C6747 and the serial FLASH W25x32 of windbond (present on EVM6747 starter kit).

Do I need to write in certain loacation in F\LASH, to be able to boot from it? Do I need to use a certain format or compression?

Regards

Arye

  • A comprehensive place to start is the Getting_Started_Guide_for_C6747 and near the bottom of that page it includes a link titled "Flashing the C6747" which has some helpful information.

Your current problem may be related to the expected format of the information stored in the boot space, or it may be related to the initialization of the SDRAM memory controller prior to doing the bootloading.

  • Hello Randy,

    Thanks for fast reply,

Where can I find the information of how the data is trored in FLASH? I guess is that it suppose to be similar to AIS format.

I thought of solustion, but I am not sure about it, so I want to ask before I implement it:

I will boot with my own bootloader. Then I will convert the *.out of the program to *.bin using AISgen, as previous, only this time I will select in AISgen in bootmode the SPI0 FLASH, and then I will copy the bin file as is to FLASH using my bootloader? Can it work?

    Regards

  • The documentation you need is available from the link and title that I gave you above. You can find how to use the bootloader and can understand what your bootmode options are.

If you want to do all the work yourself, you can write your own basic bootloader and put it in the NOR Flash, but the same documentation will be needed to tell you have to do that. None of it is hard, but there are details you must understand and those details are written up in the documentation available through the Wiki site mentioned above.
