Some question about EVM6472

Good morning

I have some question about EVM6472.
1)I want to work with this processor by the CCS 3.3 but I haven't got any drivers for this processor.
Can  I work with this board by CCS 3.3 or should I do it by CCS 4?
2)  I have found LLD and MQT libraries  for 6474 but they can't support my processor (6472). Can I change number of cores from 3 to 6 and use all templates  and projects for 6474?

  • Please see Mariana's links to information on the EVM in her reply here. eInfoChips provides excellent online support for this EVM. The support model moving forward for the EVM6472 is with CCSv4, so my recommendation is to move to CCSv4.

Since you have this excellent support in place, it will be much easier to use the libraries provided for the C6472 rather than migrating from C6474 libraries.

  • 1.You are right about CCS 4 but it’s too expensive  for me.

2.Unfortunately eInfoChips provides support only for EVM. LLD library or MQT is developed by TI.

This is the last version LLD library for DSP/BIOS 5. Library support C6474 and don't support c6472.

When this library will support this processor?

We at TI have not done a good job at communicating the ease of use of CCSv4 for development with our EVMs. We have a very attractive pricing plan when compared with past version of our tools, but there is enough variation that it becomes confusion for our customers when it is meant to be a huge benefit for our customers.

My understanding is that CCSv4 is FREE for use with an XDS100 emulator (available for less than $100 from several suppliers) or with any of our latest DSK/EVMs that have embedded XDS100 emulators. This includes the EVM6472 that you have.

When you received your EVM6472, the DVD should have included all the files you need, including CCSv4 and the SDK.

You can also download CCSv4 for use on your EVM6472 here .

I would expect these to be included in either the SDK or the CCSv4 installation for this EVM. I recommend you install these and I will look into the plan for the LLD. As Tim said in the other thread, the CSL is still being developed; so it is possible that the LLD needs to sit on top of that CSL.

As the following link suggest, CCSv3.3 XDS100 emulator drivers does not support TMS320C64x+ processor family:  http://tiexpressdsp.com/index.php/XDS100#XDS100_Installation_Instructions

You can work with c6472 processor on CCS 3.3 using an external emulator. For connecting CCS 3.3 with 6472 EVM using the third pary emulator (ex. Specturm Digital), use the target configuration for TMS320TCI6486 in the CCS configuration setup.

CCSv4 is distributed as part of EVM. You can download the latest CCS 4 version from the following link:

    http://tiexpressdsp.com/index.php/Download_CCS

As the wiki page explains, "CCSv4 Can be used for FREE with EVMs, DSKs and eZdsp boards that have onboard emulation as well as simulators and XDS100 emulators."

You will need a FREE licence from TI to use CCSv4 to connect 6472EVM using onboard XDS100 emulator.  Details to get the licnece are also explained on the wiki page above.

I connected to him as TCI6486 with CCS3.3...

  • Do you have Configuration file for CCS3.3 ?

You cannot connect EVM6472 with CCS3.3 using onboard XDS100 emulator. You will have to use the configuration file corresponding to your external emulator. What external emulator are you using?

Yes, I not use onboard emulator - I use external xds510 class emulator.

q1.  Could anybody say - has EVM6472 blink any led when it power up?

q2. I heard about troubles to use generic xds510 class emulator (not BH, SD ) with ccs 4? Is it true?

  • I am going  to use XDS560 .

  • A good choice!

The Quick Start Guide that comes with the EVM6472 shows the switch settings that enable the Out Of Box demo. This demo will blink LEDs.

You could search this forum for a similar complaint, but I have not heard of it. Every emulator vendor should state clearly if their emulator will work with CCSv4.

What would be an example of a "generic xds510 class emulator"?

I have downloaded CCS 4 and tried to use them. It is terrible. When I try to create DSP/BIOS 6 project CCS4 sometimes crushes. Also sometimes CCS4 can’t connect to XDS100 or crushes when I debug my program. After CCS4 starts there are many JAVA errors in the error window.

I don’t want to use that kind of a raw product. I am still waiting for more stable CCS4 with DSP/BIOS.

I want to use CCS 3.3 but I haven’t got a Configuration file for TCI6486 or C6472. My CCS doesn’t plug C6472. Does anybody have a Configuration file for C6472 and XDS560? How can I create my own configuration file for C6472?

Also I want to know when LLD or MQT libraries will be ready? I couldn’t find a LLD for c6472 in CCS4 SDK. I have found LLD for CCS4 and DSP/BIOS 6. This LLD library can’t support c6472.

For creating a custom configuration file, follow following steps:

    1. Start Setup Code Composer Studio v3.3
    2. Select "create board" tab of the center column
    3. There you should see the emulator drivers installed with CCS3.3
    4. Select your emulator conecetion and click on "Add". Provide a name to your connection. (Eg. EVM6472_XXX). Your connection will move to System Configuration column
    5. Select the connection  in the System configuration. The custom board tab  will show available processors.
    6. Select a  ICEPICK_C, Give subpaths as 6. Specify the port number starting from 16 to 21 for the subpaths 0 to 6 respectively.
    7. Select each subpath in the "System configuration" column and add a "TMS320C64XP" processor under each subpath.
    8. A similar procedure is specified for creating a custom target configuration for CCSv4 at the wiki: http://tiexpressdsp.com/index.php/Target_Configuration_-_Custom_Configurations

    Hope this will help you.

I verified switch setting with the flayer - but LEDs does't blink up power up.  May be EEPROM boottable is corrupted?

I used to work with CCE 3.0. This is comprehensive tool. I hope ccs4.0  will be good soon.

Just do as wrote Mr Amitkumar Solanki (step1-8) - my preconfigured entry for TCI6486 looks like he wrote.

C6472 was unveiled just at end of October - release date of ccs4 dated as end of October too. May it be compatible to 6472?

You have to check  detailed, but its look as brothers, ;)

  • My EVM6472 is an early pre-release board, should not be different than what is provided on the production boards like the one you have received. It may be helpful to identify the board revision information in case there are any issues that need to be examined. On my board, that is on a white label on the bottom of the board near the edge connector.

I am able to run the POST using the switch settings in the Quick Start Guide (version 0.2) in the picture with the large 1 label. When I plug in power or press the Cold Reset button, the two User LEDs turn on for about 7 seconds, blink off quickly, then turn off 2 seconds later.

Of course, you have to be using the power supply that came with the EVM6472 and not one from any other TI DSP EVM. The voltage requirement is higher for this one. You should see a green LED come on near the 12V-DC connector when you connect power.

Please try this to see if you can get correct behavior.

Once you have verified that you don't get the post runnig on bootmode 2, you can flash the EEPROM with the post application by following the Procedure 5-1 Flashing POST to I2C EEPROM of TMDXEVM6472_ UserGuide located at <SDK_INSTALL_DIR/evmc6472\docs>  of SDK.

You can skip steps 1 and 2, and flash the already provided EEPROM binary image located at <\evmc6472\bootloader_package\EEPROM_flash_image_gen\I2Cboot\output\i2cromdsp_post.dat> to EEPROM using the I2C_EEPROM_writer utility by following step 3.

If you have any EVM related query then you can contact the EVM support at evm6472support@einfochips.com .

    Hope this will help you.

Board has tag "SW Rev2.0" on bottom side, powered by "native" 12VDC adapter, LED D16 lights on, All 6 core accessible by CCS 3.3 through external emulator, Pressing to "Cold reset" botton makes blink leds on ethernet connector with delay ~1sec, LEDs D1/D2 light on during 5 sec then OFF and then have a spark,  row of 8 LEDs (marked as D3-D10 that is controlled through I2C) doesn't  light ON. Probably, I see the same that you.

    Thanks for help!

P.S. I saw many  TI's EMV and DSK - but this have the least expressive test indication, imho.
