DM365 PRTCSS connection is mandatory ?

Hello we are designing a board with the DM365.

We are asking ourselves if the PRTCSS block was to be mandatory connected to power control devices in order to ensure the sequencing of power, or was is an optional luxury.

Indeed I would like to know what happen if i cut all the powers at the same moment with only a switch between the powe control device and the battery (so with no connection with the PRTCSS) ?

thank you for your answer. and sorry for the triviality of the question, it is our first design with DM365

  • I am not sure if I fully understand your question, but I will give it a shot.

It is necessary to power PRTCSS with an independant power supply (if you notice battery is missing on EVM) and you do not need to use PRTCSS if you do not wish.  The main data-sheet gives you information on how to tie certain PRTCSS pins if you are not using this block.  However, the data-sheet also suggests that you need to follow the proper power sequencing which includes

"The PRTCSS core must always be powered-on and powered-off regardless of whether the PRTCSS feature is used. If the PRTCSS sequencer is to be used in any PRTCSS modes, please refer to the TMS320DM36x PRTCSS User's Guide (SPRUFJ0) for more details on the differences to the power sequence."

Therefore, even though you do not have to use this hardware block, you still need to follow proper power sequencing steps.

  • PRTCSS can be unused but it still needs to be powered, and regardless of the PRTCSS the DM365 still requires specific power up and power down sequences to maintain device reliability.

For details on the power sequencing requirements please see section 6.4 of the DM365 datasheet.

For details on bypassing the PRTCSS please see section 1.4.2 of the PRTCSS guide SPRUFJ0.

As to what happens if the power sequencing is not followed it is hard to say as the device is not tested in this fashion, you could end up with various odd effects.

EDIT: Sorry for the double answer there, I did not realize Juan had already answered here.
