Code composer studio and bios for C5421

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Hi we are trying to upgrade from CCS 3.1 to CCS5. I found that BIOS 5.x doesnt support C5421. I tried looking for BIOS 4.x which will support C5421 but couldnt. Please let me know a place where I can find this.

Regards,

Nikhil.

  • Hi Nikhil,

BIOS 5.4 does not support C54x. Earlier versions do support C54x though (like BIOS 5.3). The problem is that CCSv5 only supports BIOS 5.4 and greater.

I would recommend staying with CCSv3.x if you still want to use BIOS on C54x.

    Thanks

    ki

  • Hi Ki-Soo,

We would like to stay with CCS3.1 but we it doesnt install on Windows 7. We do have a license for CCS 3.3 but we do have the same problem of C5421 not been found error while converting the cdb to tcf.

since our company is upgrading to Windows 7 we cannot run the CCS 3.1. We tried using a virtual machine but using the emulator is a problem. Please let us know if it is possible to upgrade to 3.3.

Another option is to supply us with the bios files with the correct cdb2tcf converter. Then we can build on CCS5, I assume.

    Please help us with this.

    Regards,

    Nikhil.

  • Yes, CCSv3.x is hit-or-miss on Windows 7. Some get it to work, other do not. Have your tried the suggestions here:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Using_CCS_with_Windows_Vista_and_7

Also make sure you run CCSv3 in XP mode compatibility and as Administrator.

One thing is if it is 64-bit machines, you will need to get 64-bit emulation drivers. CCS does not come with any. Some 3rd parties support it.

What is the problem? What emulator?

You may get it to build. But you lose a lot of debug support. None of the RTA tools will work with programs built with a BIOS version before BIOS5.4. I don't really suggest it.

CCS 3.1 we tried it on three different Windows 7 machines but were not able to install it. We had used the above instructions with all the machines.

CCS 3.3 we installed correctly, but the cdb2tcf did not convert our cdb file. The error given was "Unknown processor C5421". We had contacted TI about this earlier and they said that an update to our installation is needed which will be provided only if we purchase CCSv5. We bought CCSv5 with the hopes of upgrading it completely but it seems its the end of the road for CCS 5. We would like to upgrade it from CCS 3.1 to 3.3 because of this XP issue. Can you please provide us with this update which you mentioned.

The USB peripheral on the virtual machine doesnt keep up with the Spectrum digital XDS510USB emulator.

The last patch for 3.3 is:

    software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/CCSv3/CCS_3_3/exports/SR12_CCS_v3.3_SR_3.3.82.13.exe

Which VM are you using? I heard of such an issue with old versions of VMware. But that was a long time ago.

I thought 3.3build 83 is the latest one.

    We tried using XPmode.

    Thanks,

3.3.82.13 is the latest patch update version. 3.3.83.20 is the latest full install version. The difference between the two versions is some additional C2000 support in 83.20, in addition to some CSPs integrated into the release for various devices - of which none is related to your device (C54x_.

Can you please confirm if C5421 is supported in CCS 3.3 at all. I updated the CCS version with the patch and it seems it isnt able to convert it. Nor do I see any BIOS versions for C5421 in CCS. I can choose the processor from the list but cdb2tcf again refuses to work at all.

    Nikhil.

  • I know C54x should be supported in BIOS 5.31 but I'm not sure of the level of support specifically for C5421. I will move this to the TI-RTOS forum for confirmation.
