Accessing I/O Locations

How do you guarantee a write to an I/O location has been completed? Is a subsequent read of the location adequate? Or is there a better way? In a search of the documentation I haven't found the answer. It would be helpful if you could point me in the right direction.

Subsequent read is used widely in software.

If I perform multiple writes and then a read will the writes complete in order and a single read cover all of them? There must be an appnote or something that covers this, I just can't think of the right search term.

This would depend on what software you are using - an OS or baremetal code, whether caches are enabled and so on. I think that for critical writes you should read directly after you write to the register. I don't know of any document that covers this topic.
