C5510 Addtional Thermal Specifications for Packaging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320VC5510A

TI has a nice app note on thermal requirements/specs; SPRA953a.  That App Note recommends not using the Theta JC for case temp (unless using device with a heat sink), but using Psi JT (Junction package Top).

The TI data sheets list a maximum Case Temp for their DSP's operation.

We need to calculate for the case temp for a given physical configuration.

The data sheet for the TMS320VC5510a lists Theta JA, and Theta JC, does not list Psi JT.

Per SPRA953a I should  not use the Theta JC value but use the Psi JT value (which the 5510 does not publish).

The data sheet also lists maximum case temp (85 C) industrial temp part (data sheet lists -40C to +85C).

We require Industrial grade devices to operate in temperatures between -40 C to +85 C.

If the max case temp is +85C we can not generate any power in the 5510 device or we will exceed spec (if used in +85C ambient).

The TMS320C64TBGLZA, for example, has a max case temp of 105 C.

That also provides Theta JA, Theta JC and Psi JT values.

We need to calculate maximum ambient temp we can use the 5510 DSP given estimated power.

We would like to use the Psi JT value for the 5510 part, to calculate case temp.

Would also like to know for sure if the Industrial grade part's max case temp is in fact +85C.
