Has C6713DSK volatile ROM or non-volatile ROM?

Hello,

I have not much experience on C6713DSK.I'm running application using C6713 DSK via Matlab Simulink.

I built and loaded the program to dsp and it worked. After turned up the  power ,when I restarted DSK  again. The aplication on DSP didn't work. Therefore I loaded the out file to the dsk again.

I wonder if  there is  a necessity to reprogram  the C6713DSK to run the aplications  after every DSP starts.

I know C6713 has non-volatile flash memory. Why is C6713DSK working like that?

C6713 behaves like volatile microcontrollers.

Could you explain this stuation? Is it true?

Best Regards..

  • Ahmet,

You will benefit from going through our archived training material on the TI Wiki Pages. Please go there and search for "c6713 training" (no quotes) and look at the C6x1x Workshop material. There are several sections that will walk you through the use of the CCS tools, and there is a section on the use of the Flashburn utility to born a program into the on-board Flash.

There is no user non-volatile memory in the C6713, but the DSK6713 has Flash memory on the board. The normal way you will use the DSK is to load a program into the internal or on-board RAM and run your tests. This will not, of course, survive a power cycle or some resets.

If your testing or application requires the board to operate after a power cycle, then you will need to learn the complete process of correctly building and burning your application into the on-board Flash.

This is all described in the workshop. Good learning!

  • Hi,

Just you are loading the apps into RAM only and not into flash,

As Randy wrote, C6713 DSK having on board flash for running the application after reboot he board,

I wonder if  there is  a necessity to reprogram  the C6713DSK to run the aplications  after every DSP starts.

If you want  to flash the app into flash then you can use "flashburn" tool,

  • Thanks Titus for your reply,

I review the especially second link( http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Flashing_the_C6713_EVM#Burning_the_Flash_using_FlashBurn) . There are few points that I didn't understand. Some  contents are present there. I wonder if I must  produce hex file by rebuilding CSS project  with changing cmd file or DSP/BIOS  before running Flash Burn utility. Or Instead of these, without changing anything ,after rebuilding  CSS ,Should I  send program out file to Flashburn as a FBTC Program File . As a result , FlashBurn will produce hex file and load it to Flash of DSK.

Simply, Is Flashburn Utility alternative content or last step of the programming flash?

  • Hi,

Sorry, I have not used this board.

My understanding from this doc is that,

Or Instead of these, without changing anything ,after rebuilding  CSS ,Should I  send program out file to Flashburn as a FBTC Program File . As a result , FlashBurn will produce hex file and load it to Flash of DSK.

No, The First point is the correct one.

After ".out" created by CCS, Need to use the cmd file to generate .hex from .out (C:\Program Files\SoftwareDesignSolutions\FlashBurnDSK\examples\DSK6713\BlinkDSK6713\BlinkDSK6713_ahex.cmd)

Here, You are compiling through command in CCS tool.

Refer step10 in "if you are using DSP/BIO" topic and  step4 in "if you are not using DSP/BIOS" topic.

  • Thanks for your help, I will try it.

  • Ahmet,

Please keep in mind that for development work, it is very rare to routinely program the code into Flash each time you are debugging the program. This is because it is rare to require operating immediately following a power up during development.

Once the application is fully debugged and working, then it will be more suitable to program the Flash memory.

Your situation may differ from this, but as you saw from the training material I referenced above, most of the work is done with RAM and not with Flash, until the very end of the program development.

  • Thank you very much.

I wondered that DSK has a non-volatile ROM. I got the answer to my question.

At the end of the project  I can try Flash ROM. I'm developing algorithms with RAM .

    I will consider your advice...
